Where to Stay Near Hakone-Yumoto Station: Choosing a Hotel by How You Get There

Choosing a hotel in Hakone-Yumoto is less about the property and more about how you get from the station to the front door. This guide walks through the three ways to reach a hotel, the luggage cut-off time that decides your options, and what to confirm before booking.

The short version: decide your route from the station first

Hakone-Yumoto Station is the main gateway to Hakone. Odakyu Romancecar limited express trains, the Hakone Tozan Railway, and Hakone Tozan buses all meet here. The area sits at roughly 100 metres above sea level and is one of Hakone’s seven historic hot spring districts, with many inns and shops around the station.

Because the district is spread along the Hayakawa river and up the surrounding slopes, an address that says “Hakone-Yumoto” does not guarantee the hotel is within walking distance of the station. There are only three ways to reach your accommodation:

  • On foot — properties along the shopping street or the riverside
  • Ryokan shuttle bus — a shared, paid minibus run jointly by local inns (200 yen per adult, per ride)
  • Route bus or Hakone Tozan Railway — for properties further up the valley, such as Tonosawa

This article is an editorial summary based on official pages from Hakone Navi, Hakone Tozan Bus, and Odakyu Electric Railway. It is not a stay report, and no property is ranked. Confirm shuttle service, meals, baths, and cancellation terms on each hotel’s own website before you book.

The 12:00 luggage deadline that shapes your choice

If you are travelling with a large suitcase, the Hakone Carry Service moves it from the station to your hotel. Understanding its schedule matters, because it changes which hotels are realistic for you.

Time What happens
08:30 Station counter opens for same-day drop-off
11:30 Deadline for online reservations
12:00 Same-day drop-off at the station closes
From 15:00 Your bag can be collected at the hotel
Next morning, 10:00 Deadline to hand the bag back in at the hotel for the return leg

Fares are 1,500 yen for a standard bag (up to 140 cm total dimensions, 15 kg) and 2,500 yen for a large bag (up to 200 cm, 30 kg). The service only covers participating hotels, so check the partner list before you book a room.

The practical rule: if you cannot reach Hakone-Yumoto Station by 12:00, this service is not available to you that day. In that case, narrow your search to hotels within walking distance of the station or hotels served by the shuttle bus. Many visitors arrive from Tokyo in the early afternoon and discover this too late.

Valuables, precision equipment, power banks, fragile items, long umbrellas, strollers, and unpackaged bottles, cans or plastic bottles are listed as items the service will not carry. Data loss on laptops and tablets is not compensated.

The ryokan shuttle bus: what it is and is not

The orange minibus outside the station is the Hakone Yumoto Onsen Ryokan Shuttle Bus. It is not a free hotel shuttle and not covered by the Hakone Freepass. It is a shared paid service operated jointly by local inns.

Item Details from the official page
Fare 200 yen per adult (junior high school age and above), 100 yen for elementary school children, free for pre-school children
Payment Paid on boarding. No change is given, so have exact coins ready
Course A (Takidori Line) Towards Hotel Nanpuso, serving 18 properties
Course B (Soun-dori Line) Towards Hotel Hatsuhana, serving 19 properties
Course C (Tonosawa Line) Round trip between the station and Ichinoyu Honkan
Boarding point Exit the 2F ticket gate, turn left, and cross the deck walkway over National Route 1

Before booking, check whether your hotel appears on the Course A, B or C list on the official page. If it does not, the shuttle will not help you.

An important gap: the official page does not publish first and last departure times, service intervals, or whether reservations are required. If you expect to arrive in the evening, contact the hotel directly and ask when the last shuttle runs. Booking a “hotel with a shuttle” and arriving after the final departure is a common and avoidable problem.

Which platform you use the next morning

The ticket gates at Hakone-Yumoto are on the second floor, reached by stairs, escalator, or lift. Where you go the next day determines which platform or bus stop you need, and therefore how much time you should allow to walk from your hotel.

Destination Where to go
Gora, Hakone Open-Air Museum Platform 3 (Hakone Tozan Railway towards Gora)
Moto-Hakone-ko, Hakone-machi-ko (Lake Ashi) Bus stop 2 (via Miyanoshita, Kowakien, Ashinoyu, or via the Hakone Shindo road)
Togendai, Sengokuhara Bus stop 3 (via Miyanoshita, Miyagino, Sengoku)
Hatajuku, Old Tokaido Road, Hotel de Yama Bus stop 4 (via the old road and Amazake-chaya)
Odawara Bus stop 5, or platform 2 for trains
Shinjuku (Romancecar) Platform 1

Hakone Freepass: the departure station changes the price

If you plan to loop around Owakudani and Lake Ashi the next day, the Hakone Freepass is worth considering. Many visitors miss that the price depends on where you buy it (official prices as confirmed on 26 August 2026):

Departure station 2 days, adult 3 days, adult
Shinjuku / Yoyogi-Uehara 7,100 yen 7,500 yen
Machida 6,820 yen 7,220 yen
Odawara / Hakone-Yumoto / Gotemba / Mishima 6,000 yen 6,400 yen

The gap between the Shinjuku and Hakone-Yumoto versions is 1,100 yen. The Shinjuku version includes one round trip on the Odakyu line between Shinjuku and Odawara, so the decision rule is simple: if a return ticket from your departure station to Hakone-Yumoto costs more than 1,100 yen, buy the Shinjuku version. Check the current fare on Odakyu’s fare information before deciding.

Covered services are the Hakone Tozan Railway, Hakone Tozan Cable Car, Hakone Ropeway, Hakone Sightseeing Cruise, Hakone Tozan buses (designated sections), the Sightseeing Facility Loop Bus, Odakyu Highway Buses, and Tokai buses (designated sections). Romancecar limited express trains require a separate limited express ticket, which is not included. The ryokan shuttle bus is also not included.

The pass can be bought at Odakyu ticket machines and counters, Odakyu Travel Service Centres, Seven-Eleven stores, and as a digital pass through the EMot smartphone app. If a service is suspended because of weather, unused sections may be refunded, which is worth knowing during typhoon season or on windy days when the ropeway stops.

Comparing hotels by how you reach them

Type Suits you if Confirm before booking
Walking distance
shopping street, riverside
You arrive late, travel light, want to walk the shopping street in the evening, or leave early the next morning Exact walking time, whether the route includes slopes or steps, whether it is walkable in rain
On a shuttle course
Takidori, Soun-dori
You have large luggage, want a quieter setting, and can reach Yumoto by 12:00 Which course (A, B or C), first and last departure times, whether the hotel also runs its own pick-up
Tonosawa and further up You want a quiet riverside stay and are not packing the itinerary with sightseeing Distance from the nearest station or bus stop, evening service frequency, whether you can arrive before dinner service

Use the access page on the hotel’s own website rather than the map pin on a booking site. Straight-line distance on a map does not show the climb.

Station facilities

Odakyu’s station information lists coin lockers, a lift, an escalator, a wheelchair ramp, a wheelchair-accessible toilet, and an ostomate-accessible toilet at Hakone-Yumoto Station. Handle-type electric wheelchairs can be used. The Hakone Carry Service counter inside the station operates from 08:30 to 19:00, and the Odakyu Travel Service Centre offers temporary hand luggage storage.

Locker availability changes by the day and during busy seasons, so do not build a plan that depends entirely on finding an empty locker.

Shuttle times, luggage deadlines and platform information are published online and can change at short notice. An eSIM arranged before you travel lets you confirm them from Hakone-Yumoto station itself. Get a Japan eSIM for your trip

If the weather turns

The ropeway can be suspended in strong winds, and trains and buses can be reduced or stopped by heavy rain or maintenance work. Check Hakone Navi’s service information page before you set out.

This is where your hotel’s location matters again. Properties near the station let you switch to the shopping street and indoor options nearby. Hotels higher up the valley have better views but fewer places you can reach on foot in bad weather. Having one wet-weather plan centred on Yumoto itself keeps a change in the forecast from ruining the trip.

Confirm before you book

  1. Walking time from Hakone-Yumoto Station, whether pick-up is offered, and whether it must be reserved — on the hotel’s official site
  2. Whether your hotel appears on the Course A, B or C list for the ryokan shuttle bus
  3. First and last shuttle departures and the service interval — not published officially, so ask the hotel
  4. Hakone Carry Service hours, fares, size limits, participating hotels, and prohibited items
  5. Check-in opening and closing times, and how to contact the hotel if you will be late
  6. Current Hakone Freepass prices, covered sections, and whether you need a separate Romancecar ticket
  7. Hakone Navi service information for suspensions, reduced timetables, and maintenance closures
  8. Weather and road warnings — heavy rain, lightning, strong wind, snow, road restrictions
  9. Room rates, availability, meal plans, and cancellation terms, which change and must be checked on the booking screen

FAQ

Should I stay in Hakone-Yumoto or higher up in Gora or Lake Ashi?

It depends on your next day. Hakone-Yumoto keeps the return trip to Tokyo simple; staying higher up reduces backtracking if your sightseeing centres on Lake Ashi or Owakudani.

Do I need to reserve the ryokan shuttle bus?

The official page does not state whether reservations are required. Ask your hotel. Bring exact coins, as the fare is paid on boarding and no change is given.

I have a large suitcase. What is the safest plan?

If you can reach the station by 12:00, use the Hakone Carry Service counter (1,500 yen for a standard bag, collected at the hotel from 15:00). If you cannot, choose a hotel within walking distance or one on a shuttle course.

Is the Hakone Freepass worth it for one night?

Only if you use the mountain transport. It does not cover the ryokan shuttle bus, so a trip that only involves the station and your hotel will not recover the cost. It becomes worthwhile if you ride the mountain railway, cable car, ropeway, and sightseeing cruise the following day.

Can I leave luggage at the hotel before check-in?

Most hotels hold bags at reception, but confirm this on the hotel’s own page before booking. At the station, coin lockers and the Odakyu Travel Service Centre are alternatives.
