Nagoya to Ise Jingu by Train: A Day Trip That Works for Mixed-Age Families

A day trip from Nagoya to Ise Jingu is easy to reach and hard to price. This guide compares the four official ticket options with published fares, and shows which one a family with a toddler, a primary-schooler and a teenager should actually buy.

Who this route is for

This is a research-based itinerary for families visiting Japan with kids of different ages who want to see both shrines of Ise Jingu in one day from Nagoya, using trains and buses only.

  • Good fit: you can leave Nagoya around 8:00 / you want to know which ticket is cheapest for your group size / you need a rain plan / you are travelling on a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday and want to use transport that only runs on those days
  • Not a good fit: you want to add Toba Aquarium or Shima (not in this route) / you arrive in Ise after midday / you plan to drive (parking near the Inner Shrine fills up)

This article is not a personal trip report. Every time, fare and closing day below comes from an official website, checked on 30 August 2026. Use it as a calculation tool, not as someone’s impressions.

Three decisions to make before you book

  1. JR or Kintetsu? Both reach Iseshi Station. JR is cheaper, Kintetsu limited express is faster with reserved seating. But which ticket wins changes with how many people travel and whether children are in your group. See the calculation below.
  2. Is your travel day a weekend or public holiday? The Sangu Bus up Mt. Asama runs only on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, 13–15 August and 30 December – 4 January. On a weekday, that part of this itinerary simply does not exist.
  3. Do you need the local bus day pass? Short answer: no if you only visit the two shrines, yes if you go up Mt. Asama. The maths is below.

Which station do I board at? (a common mix-up)

Nagoya has two separate stations for this trip, and they are not the same building entrance:

  • Nagoya Station (JR) — for the Rapid “Mie” service. Mostly non-reserved ordinary cars; a reserved seat costs extra.
  • Kintetsu-Nagoya Station — for Kintetsu limited express trains. This is where the Kintetsu Ise-Jingu pass is sold at the ticket window.

At the Ise end, Iseshi Station is shared by JR and Kintetsu, but it has separate exits. The Ise City Tourist Association states that from the JR-side exit of Iseshi Station it is about a 5-minute walk to the entrance of the Outer Shrine approach road. If you arrive on Kintetsu and use the other exit, add walking time.

Ise City Tourist Association gives the Nagoya–Iseshi journey as about 1 hour 20 minutes by either Kintetsu limited express or JR Rapid “Mie”.

Calculation 1: is the bus day pass worth it?

On the standard route you ride the bus twice: Geku-mae → Naiku-mae, and Naiku-mae → Iseshi-eki-mae. Each ride is ¥520 adult / ¥260 child.

  • Adult: ¥1,040 paid per ride vs ¥1,300 day pass → pay per ride, save ¥260
  • Child: ¥520 vs ¥650 → pay per ride, save ¥130
  • Break-even is 3 rides (¥1,560 adult / ¥780 child)

But if you add Mt. Asama, the answer flips. The Sangu Bus is ¥900 each way — a round trip alone is ¥1,800, already ¥500 above the day pass. Mie Kotsu states in writing that the Michikusa pass is valid on the Sangu Bus. On a Mt. Asama day, buy the pass; on a two-shrine day, don’t.

Calculation 2: which train ticket for a family?

This is where the child fare decides it.

  • The Ise-Toba Area Free Ticket has no child price at all (adult ¥5,300 only). For a family, cross it off first.
  • The JR coupon book is the cheapest per person — but one coupon covers up to two children. Two adults + two young children can travel one way on 2 coupons, so a round trip uses all 4 (¥5,040 total).
  • The Kintetsu pass at adult ¥6,800 / child ¥3,400 is the most expensive, but it includes reserved limited express vouchers and 3 days of unlimited buses. With a stroller and a tired toddler, a reserved seat and unlimited bus rides may be worth more than the fare difference. Buy it in advance — it is not sold on the day.

Weekend and holiday add-on: Mt. Asama

The Sangu Bus (Skyline route) links Isuzugawa-eki-mae, Urata-cho, Kongoshoji and Sanjo Koen. Fare from Isuzugawa-eki-mae to Kongoshoji / Sanjo Koen is ¥900, journey about 24 minutes. Ise City states the ride from Urata-cho (beside Oharaimachi) to the summit takes about 20 minutes.

There are only five round trips a day, so choosing your uphill bus also chooses your downhill bus.

Miss a bus and the next one is about two hours away. At the 555 m summit there is the “Sky Post” — an actual postbox that is collected, according to the Ise-Shima Tourism and Convention Organization — and the summit foot bath, 10:00–16:00, ¥100 adult / ¥50 child. To do both, plan on skipping one bus. On a weekday the only public option is a taxi, about 20 minutes from Kintetsu Isuzugawa Station or JR/Kintetsu Toba Station.

Travelling with children of different ages

Baby / toddler

The two shrine grounds are large and mostly flat gravel paths, which is slow going for a stroller but not stepped. The bus ride between the shrines is 10–20 minutes, so a nap can be timed to it. Sengukan has a nappy-changing table in its multipurpose toilet but no nursing room, which the museum states explicitly — plan feeding around Iseshi Station or the Okage Yokocho area instead. Sengukan also has visitor coin lockers (¥100 refundable deposit), useful if you are carrying a day bag as well as a stroller.
Keep the bus to route 51 via Chosha-mae or route 55 (about 10–12 minutes) rather than the 20-minute Chokokan variant when a child is close to melting down. Same fare, half the time.

Elementary-age child

Okage Yokocho is the part of the day that works best for this age: 50-plus shops in a compact town-like block, five minutes from the Inner Shrine bridge. Ise’s two signature dishes — Ise udon (listed by Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries among its 100 selected local dishes) and tekone-zushi — are both easy for children to eat. The Akafuku main shop lets you watch the mochi being made, which holds attention for a few minutes without costing anything.
Note that only akafuku mochi is served inside the main shop; the shaved-ice and sweet-bean versions are sold at a separate outlet in front of it.

Teenager

If your teenager is likely to find two shrines in one day repetitive, the weekend Mt. Asama add-on is the answer: a bus up a mountain road, a 555 m summit view over Ise Bay, a working postbox to send a card home from, and a foot bath. Alternatively, the Jingu Chokokan / Museum of Agriculture / Jingu Art Museum (¥700 combined adult, ¥200 primary and junior high) sits on route 51’s Chokokan variant, so it can be added as a stopover between the shrines.

Practical points for the whole group

  • Luggage: leave suitcases at the Geku-mae Tourist Service Center or in the station lockers on arrival. There is no equivalent service built into the Inner Shrine side of the day.
  • Payment: bus fares here are small-value cash or IC card transactions. Carry coins — a family of five paying ¥520 each with notes slows a bus down considerably.
  • Reservations: nothing on this route requires a reservation except the Kintetsu pass (advance purchase) and, if you want it, a reserved seat on the Rapid “Mie”. Shrine entry is free and needs no ticket.
  • Shoes: you stay outdoors throughout; no shoes-off rooms are involved in this itinerary.

Okage Yokocho hours: Jan–Feb 9:30–17:00 (17:30 on Feb weekends and holidays); Mar–Jul 9:30–17:30 (18:00 on Apr–Jul weekends and holidays); Aug–Sep 9:30–18:00; Oct 9:30–17:30; Nov–Dec 9:30–17:00. Early opening on the 1st of each month for the Tsuitachi morning market; hours change during long holiday periods. From October to February it can close at 17:00, so an evening food walk is not possible in those months.

FAQ

Q. Which shrine should we visit first?

A. This route puts the Outer Shrine first — for practical reasons, not ritual ones. It is about a 5-minute walk from the JR-side exit of Iseshi Station, so you start walking rather than queueing for a bus, and you save one ¥520 adult fare each way compared with going to the Inner Shrine first.

Q. Should we buy the bus day pass to be safe?

A. On a two-shrine day it costs you about ¥260 more per adult and ¥130 more per child than paying per ride. Break-even is three rides. On a weekend Mt. Asama day, buy it — the ¥900 each-way Sangu Bus makes it clearly cheaper.

Q. Can we buy the Kintetsu pass at the station on the morning we travel?

A. No. It is advance-purchase only. Buy it at a Kintetsu ticket window (Kintetsu-Nagoya and others) or through a listed travel agency before your travel date. Refunds are only possible if every coupon is unused, with a ¥500 fee.

Q. Is there anywhere to nurse a baby along this route?

A. Sengukan states it has a nappy-changing table in its multipurpose toilet but no nursing facility. We could not confirm nursing rooms at the shrines themselves from official pages, so this article does not claim any. Plan feeding around Iseshi Station or the Okage Yokocho area, and confirm on the day.

Q. Can we reach the “Sky Post” on a weekday?

A. Not by bus. The Ise-Shima Tourism and Convention Organization lists the public-transport option as a taxi, about 20 minutes from Kintetsu Isuzugawa Station or JR/Kintetsu Toba Station. By car, the Ise-Shima Skyline toll is ¥1,270 for a standard car and last entry is 45 minutes before closing.

Q. Does it work if we arrive early?

A. Very well. Ise Jingu opens at 5:00 all year and the Akafuku main shop opens at 5:00 with no closing day. An early train lets you finish the Outer Shrine before the crowds. Just fix your return train first — the Rapid “Mie” does not run often.
