Matsushima Day Trip from Sendai by Train: A Family Itinerary with Current 2026 Prices

Matsushima is a 40-minute train ride from Sendai and works well as a day trip with children of different ages. But two things changed in 2026 that most English pages have not caught up with: JR East raised fares on 14 March 2026, and Zuiganji Temple raised admission on 1 April 2026. Prices you find elsewhere are often the old ones.

Who this itinerary is for

  • Families visiting Japan with kids of different ages — a baby or toddler, an elementary-age child, and a teenager in the same group.
  • People staying in Sendai without a car. Everything below is reachable on foot from Matsushima-kaigan Station.
  • People who want to avoid mistakes more than see everything. Closing times in Matsushima shift by month, and one boat runs only once an hour.

1. Get on the right train — and get off at the right station

There are two stations with similar names. Matsushima Tourism Association states the following (checked 12 September 2026):

Do the arithmetic: the Tohoku Main Line is 15 minutes faster on the train, but you then walk 20 minutes each way — 40 minutes round trip. With a stroller and a tired toddler, the Senseki Line to Matsushima-kaigan wins. Use Matsushima Station only if you are continuing north toward Hiraizumi, or if the Senseki Line is suspended.

The “Senseki-Tohoku Line” does not stop at Matsushima-kaigan

A separate service called the Senseki-Tohoku Line also runs from Sendai toward Ishinomaki. On JR East’s own timetable for Takagimachi Station, the Senseki Line and the Senseki-Tohoku Line appear as two different timetables. Boarding the wrong one carries you past the tourist area. Confirm the platform sign says Senseki Line (仙石線) before boarding. If you do board the wrong train, change to the Senseki Line at Takagimachi and come back.

2. Tickets: buy singles, not the pass

The Sendai Marugoto Pass is often recommended. Here is why it does not pay off for a Matsushima day trip (all figures from Sendai City Transportation Bureau, checked 12 September 2026):

  • Sendai Marugoto Pass: ¥2,930 adult / ¥1,470 child, valid 2 consecutive days. Free area includes JR Sendai–Matsushima–Matsushima-kaigan–Yamadera–Shiroishi, the subway, city buses, Loople Sendai and Sendai Airport Line.
  • Loople Sendai + subway 1-day ticket: ¥920 adult / ¥460 child
  • Subway 1-day ticket: ¥840 adult (¥620 on weekends and holidays)

The calculation: ¥2,930 − ¥920 = ¥2,010. The pass only pays off if your JR return fare between Sendai and Matsushima-kaigan exceeds ¥2,010. For a 40-minute local ride, it will not. The pass becomes worth considering only if you use both days and add Yamadera or Shiroishi.

Important about fares: JR East’s official FAQ confirms that fares were revised on 14 March 2026, and that tickets bought on or before 13 March were sold at the old fare even for later travel. We could not confirm the exact post-revision Sendai–Matsushima-kaigan fare on an official page, so we do not print an amount here. Check it at JR East’s fare revision site before you go. IC cards (Suica, PASMO, ICOCA and others) work on this section.

3. The itinerary (March–October)

The sightseeing boat is the fixed point: the Niomaru course departs on the hour, 9:00 to 16:00, and takes 50 minutes. Everything else bends around it.

What to cut when you fall behind

Drop in this order: Fukuura Island (50 min) → Kanrantei (40 min) → Oshima (20 min). Keep the boat and Zuiganji to the end. The boat runs only once an hour and Zuiganji’s last admission is early, so neither tolerates “we’ll come back later.”

4. In December and January you lose about two hours

Zuiganji’s closing time changes four times a year. Last admission is 30 minutes before closing.

The gap is 90 minutes on Zuiganji alone. Add the cancelled 16:00 boat and the bridge closing at 16:30, and a winter visit loses roughly two hours off the back of the day.

Winter version: 10:00 boat → Godaido → lunch → be inside Zuiganji by 13:00 → Entsuin by 14:00 → Fukuura Island or Kanrantei by 15:00. Choose either Kanrantei or market snacking, not both. The operator also notes the 9:00 winter departure may use a smaller vessel.

5. Only one thing needs booking in advance

If your family wants all-you-can-eat grilled oysters, settle it before you leave your hotel. Everything else you can decide on the day.

6. Rain plan

Indoor options sit within walking distance of the station, so rain reshapes the day rather than ending it:

  1. Zuiganji (¥1,000) — the main halls are indoors; the approach path is not, so bring an umbrella.
  2. Kanrantei and Matsushima Museum (¥300) — matcha with a sweet from ¥600. The best place to reset a tired toddler.
  3. Miyagi Matsushima Rikyu (¥400 junior high and up, ¥200 ages 4 to elementary; 10:00–18:00) — rooftop deck and a museum, right by the station.
  4. Michinoku Date Masamune Historical Museum, Matsushima Retro Kan, The Museum MATSUSHIMA, Fujita Kyohei Glass Museum.

Caution: for the four venues in item 4 we could only find prices on JR East’s Matsushima tourism page, and that same page still lists outdated prices for Fukuura Island and Kanrantei. Treat those four as unverified and check at the entrance. Items 1–3 were confirmed on the operators’ own sites.

The boat operator states it may cancel departures at short notice for safety depending on weather. Wind and waves matter more than rain.

7. Practical notes for families

Luggage — and the closing-time trap

Coin lockers are at JR Matsushima-kaigan Station, JR Matsushima Station, the Michinoku Date Masamune Historical Museum, the Miyagi Matsushima-kaigan Rest House, and Matsushima Rikyu Umi-no-eki (Matsushima Tourism Association).

At the Matsushima-kaigan Rest House, lockers are ¥500 per use (¥500 coin only) and oversized bags can be left for ¥700 per item. Opening hours are 9:00–17:00 (April–November) and 9:00–16:30 (December–March).

This is the trap: in winter, if you leave bags there and then walk to Fukuura Island, you may return after it has closed. In winter use the station lockers, or leave luggage at your Sendai hotel. Note that Japanese coin lockers usually need a ¥500 coin or an IC card — get coins at the station.

Nursing, nappies and toilets

  • Nursing rooms: Matsushima-kaigan Rest House and the Ishidasawa Disaster Prevention Centre. The Rest House has a free-standing nursing booth built from local timber.
  • Accessible toilets are at several points in the town, per the tourism association.
  • Zuiganji states that the only area accessible by wheelchair is the treasure hall.
  • Godaido’s slatted bridge cannot be crossed by wheelchair. Do not attempt it with a stroller.

Japanese specifics worth knowing

  • You take your shoes off inside Zuiganji and Kanrantei. Slip-on shoes for everyone saves 10 minutes per stop with a large family.
  • Child pricing differs by venue. The boat splits at junior high school; Zuiganji and Entsuin charge one rate for elementary and junior high together; Fukuura Island charges one rate for elementary, junior high and high school. Read each sign rather than assuming.
  • Cash still matters. The Rest House lockers take only a ¥500 coin.

8. Check before you travel

  • The JR fare for Sendai–Matsushima-kaigan after the 14 March 2026 revision, via JR East’s fare revision site
  • That your train is the Senseki Line, not the Senseki-Tohoku Line
  • Zuiganji’s closing time for the month you are visiting
  • Fukuura Bridge hours. The two official sources disagree: Matsushima Town says 8:30–17:00 (Apr–Oct) and 8:30–16:30 (Nov–Mar); the tourism association says 8:30–17:00 (Mar–Oct) and 8:30–16:30 (Nov–Feb). If you visit in March or November, confirm that morning
  • Whether the boat is running (cancellations for weather) and, in winter, that the 16:00 departure is cancelled
  • Oyster hut operating dates and booking slots — online payment only
  • Prices and hours for the four rain-plan venues listed as unverified
