Is the Hakone Free Pass Worth It? A Section-by-Section Break-Even Check

A break-even check for the Hakone Free Pass, using only official fares. For families with kids of different ages, the child pass is the part that decides it.

The short answer

The Hakone Free Pass is not sold as a one-day ticket. The shortest version is valid for 2 days, and the Shinjuku version costs ¥7,100 for an adult and ¥1,600 for a child. Those two numbers behave very differently, so adults and children in your group may need different answers.

  • Adults: the pass pays for itself only if you ride the Hakone Ropeway. Without the ropeway, you lose money.
  • Children: two ropeway and pirate-ship rides alone almost equal the ¥1,600 child pass. For kids, the pass is very hard to lose on.

Because of that split, a realistic option for a family is buying the pass for the children and deciding separately for the adults.

Step 1: strip out the round trip to find the real price

The Shinjuku pass already includes the Odakyu round trip between Shinjuku and Hakone-Yumoto, so ¥7,100 is not the price of “Hakone”. Odakyu’s official fare for Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto is ¥1,270 by paper ticket (¥1,261 by IC card).

  • ¥1,270 × 2 = ¥2,540 (round trip)
  • ¥7,100 − ¥2,540 = ¥4,560

¥4,560 is what you are really paying for unlimited travel inside Hakone. That is the only number you need to beat.

Step 2: the fares inside Hakone

All amounts below are from the official Odakyu Hakone group sites, checked on 14 September 2026.

Section Vehicle Adult fare Child fare Official running time
Hakone-Yumoto → Chokoku-no-Mori Hakone Tozan Railway ¥460 — About 40 min Yumoto–Gora (8.9 km)
Chokoku-no-Mori → Gora Hakone Tozan Railway ¥160 —
Gora → Sounzan Cable car ¥430 — About 10 min (209 m climb, 1.2 km)
Sounzan → Togendai Hakone Ropeway ¥2,000 one way
¥3,000 return
¥700 one way
¥1,000 return
About 10 min per section, cars every 1 min
Togendai Port → Moto-Hakone Port Hakone Sightseeing Cruise (pirate ship) ¥1,700 one way
¥3,000 return
¥850 one way
¥1,300 return
Check the seasonal timetable
Hakone-machi Port ↔ Moto-Hakone Port Pirate ship ¥600 ¥300 Check the seasonal timetable
Moto-Hakone Port → Hakone-Yumoto Sta. Hakone Tozan Bus ¥1,210 — Check the timetable on the day
Gora → Hakone Glass Forest Hakone Tozan Bus ¥480 — Check the timetable on the day
Gora → Shisseikaen-mae Hakone Tozan Bus ¥590 — Check the timetable on the day

The First-Class Cabin surcharge on the pirate ship is extra even with the pass: ¥800 adult / ¥400 child from Moto-Hakone Port and Togendai Port, and ¥240 adult / ¥120 child from Hakone-machi Port.

Step 3: four ways to travel, four answers

Plan Fares inside Hakone Total Against ¥4,560
A. Stay in Hakone-Yumoto only no rides ¥0 −¥4,560
B. Return trip to Gora (460+160) × 2 ¥1,240 −¥3,320
C. Return trip to Owakudani 620×2 + 430×2 + ropeway return 3,000 ¥5,100 +¥540
D. Full loop to Lake Ashi and back 460+160+430+2,000+1,700+1,210 ¥5,960 +¥1,400
E. Loop plus a Sengokuhara bus return 5,960 + 590×2 ¥7,140 +¥2,580

Plan C is the break-even line, and it is thin. It becomes comfortable if you stop at Hakone Gora Park, where showing the Hakone Free Pass at the gate means free admission (normally ¥650 for adults; elementary school age and younger are free anyway). That turns +¥540 into +¥1,190.

Why the child pass changes the family decision

The child Hakone Free Pass from Shinjuku is ¥1,600 for 2 days. Compare it with just two official child fares:

  • Ropeway, Sounzan to Togendai, one way: ¥700
  • Pirate ship, Togendai Port to Moto-Hakone Port, one way: ¥850
  • Total: ¥1,550

That is ¥50 short of the pass price — and this comparison deliberately ignores the Shinjuku–Hakone-Yumoto round trip that the child pass also includes. One ride on the mountain railway, cable car or bus tips it over. If your itinerary includes the ropeway at all, the child pass is easy to justify.

A note on Japanese child fares: “child” on Japanese railways normally means elementary school age (roughly 6–12). Children under 6 usually travel free with an adult, and teenagers from junior high school age pay the adult fare. So in a family with a baby, an elementary-age child and a teenager, you are typically buying two adult passes for the parents plus one for the teenager, one child pass, and nothing for the baby. Confirm the exact age rules at the ticket window before you buy.

What each age actually gets out of the loop

Age band How the loop works for them Where it goes wrong
Baby / toddler The loop is all sitting: 40 min train, 10 min cable car, ropeway cabins every minute, then a boat. Hakone-Yumoto Station has a baby care room, nappy-changing facilities and a baby chair. Hakone Gora Park officially does not allow strollers or wheelchairs — steep slopes and steps throughout. If you are pushing a stroller, drop the ¥650 saving from your calculation and plan Plan D instead of Plan C.
Elementary-age child This is the age the pass is built for. Five different vehicles in one day, and the Hakone Open-Air Museum lends strollers free and has free (¥100-refund) lockers. Owakudani is an exposed outdoor viewpoint with sulphur smell. In rain or strong wind, move the museum time earlier instead of waiting it out.
Teenager Pays the adult fare, so the adult break-even applies to them too — which means the ropeway matters for their ticket as well. A Yumoto-only or Gora-only day loses ¥3,300–¥4,600 per teenager. Do not buy adult passes “for the family” unless the loop is actually in the plan.

Where to board, and which pass to buy

There is no Tokyo Station version of the Hakone Free Pass. It is an Odakyu ticket, so you first choose which Odakyu station to start from. Official prices:

Starting station 2 days (adult) 3 days (adult) 2 days (child)
Shinjuku / Yoyogi-Uehara ¥7,100 ¥7,500 ¥1,600
Fujisawa ¥7,050 ¥7,450 —
Machida ¥6,820 ¥7,220 ¥1,600
Odawara / Hakone-Yumoto / Gotemba / Mishima ¥6,000 ¥6,400 ¥1,500

The gap between Shinjuku and Odawara is ¥1,100, and that ¥1,100 buys you the Odakyu round trip between Shinjuku and Odawara. If you are starting from Tokyo Station, the decision is one subtraction:

(JR round trip Tokyo↔Odawara) − (JR round trip Tokyo↔Shinjuku) > ¥1,100 → buy the Shinjuku pass. Less than ¥1,100 → buy the Odawara pass.

We could not confirm current JR fares on JR East’s own pages, and JR East revised its fares for tickets purchased from 14 March 2026, so we do not quote JR amounts here. Look up the two round trips at the station and do the subtraction.

Two practical points beyond price. From Shinjuku you ride one Odakyu train all the way to Hakone-Yumoto, which matters when you have a stroller and suitcases. Via Odawara you change trains, and if you use the Shinkansen the express charge is separate from the pass.

The Romancecar is a separate decision

The pass does not include limited express tickets. Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto on the Romancecar costs ¥1,200, or ¥1,150 if you buy the ticketless fare online. You pay that whether or not you hold a Free Pass, so decide “reserved seats for the family” and “buy the pass” independently. Romancecar seats are all reserved, which is worth having with small children.

Luggage, payment and buying the ticket

  • Leave the suitcases at Hakone-Yumoto. The mountain railway, cable car and ropeway cars are small. Hakone-Yumoto Station has coin lockers, lifts, escalators, a wheelchair-accessible toilet, an ostomate-accessible toilet, nappy-changing facilities, a baby chair and a baby care room. Hakone Carry Service inside the ticket gates runs 8:30–19:00.
  • Buy the pass up to one month before your travel date. Ticket machines only sell passes valid from the same day. Sales points include Odakyu stations, the EMot app, Seven-Eleven stores, travel agencies, Odakyu Travel, Hakone Tozan Railway stations and tourist information centres. The Odakyu Travel Center at Hakone-Yumoto is open 9:00–19:00.
  • A digital version exists via EMot, which means a working phone and mobile data. You will also want data on the mountain to check whether the ropeway is running.
  • Advance tickets can be cheaper. The Hakone Open-Air Museum charges ¥2,000 at the gate but ¥1,800 for web advance tickets (high school and university ¥1,600 / ¥1,400; elementary and junior high ¥800 / ¥600; preschool free).

If you are visiting Japan and need data for timetables, suspension notices and the digital pass, sorting a plan out before you land is simpler than queuing at the airport.

Bad weather, suspensions and crowds

  • The ropeway suspends service in strong wind, lightning or an approaching typhoon. If it stops, Plan C loses ¥3,000 of its ¥5,100 and goes into the red. The pass is partly insurance here: switching to a Tozan bus from Gora to Togendai or Moto-Hakone costs nothing extra because the buses are inside the free area.
  • Ropeway hours change by season: 9:00–17:00 from February to November, 9:00–16:15 in December and January. In winter the last run is 45 minutes earlier, so do not leave the ropeway to the end of the day.
  • Rain: cut the outdoor time at Owakudani and move indoor time earlier — the Hakone Open-Air Museum (9:00–17:00, open all year, last admission 30 min before closing) or the Hakone Glass Forest Museum (10:00–17:30, last admission 17:00, indoor galleries, workshop and cafe). Both are reachable on free-area vehicles.
  • If the boat is cancelled in rough weather, take a Tozan bus from Togendai towards Moto-Hakone and Hakone-Yumoto.
  • Winter warning for Sengokuhara: Hakone Wetlands Botanical Garden is open only 14 March to 30 November. From December to mid-March you cannot use it to top up the value of your pass; use the Glass Forest Museum instead.
  • Crowds at Owakudani: do not queue. Take the next ropeway cabin and spend the time at Togendai or Moto-Hakone. The boat and bus at the end of the loop are the infrequent parts.

Check these before you buy

  • The current pass price at your starting station (Hakone Navi still shows the pre-October-2025 prices of ¥6,100 from Shinjuku and ¥5,000 from Odawara alongside the current ones)
  • JR fares Tokyo↔Shinjuku and Tokyo↔Odawara after the 14 March 2026 revision
  • Exact child age rules and whether your teenager pays the adult price
  • Section fares for the mountain railway, cable car and Tozan buses (Hakone Navi’s own pages disagree with each other; this article uses the figures from its fare-verification feature)
  • Pirate ship seasonal timetable, journey time and cancellation policy
  • Ropeway operating status and scheduled maintenance periods on the day
  • Hakone Gora Park’s three annual maintenance closure days, and how the free-admission benefit is applied at the gate
  • Whether the Hakone Open-Air Museum and the pirate ship First-Class Cabin give a Free Pass discount, and how much
  • Hakone Glass Forest Museum admission prices and closing days
