Rain in the forecast for your Hakone day? This guide shows how to switch to an indoor-first itinerary from Tokyo, and what to do when the Hakone Ropeway or the Lake Ashi pirate ship stops running. Official sources were last checked on 19 September 2026.
The short answer: decide by what is running, not by the rain
The hard part of a rainy day in Hakone is not the rain. It is that you will not know until the morning whether the ropeway and the pirate ship are operating. The Hakone Ropeway’s official page says it may suspend service when strong wind, lightning, an approaching typhoon or other severe weather is expected, and also for scheduled maintenance. Rain alone does not always stop it, but rain plus wind often does.
So this plan starts with one check on the morning of your trip, the service status section of the Hakone Navi transport page, and then picks one of three routes.
| Morning status | Route | Core stops |
|---|---|---|
| Rain, but ropeway and ship are running | Plan A: indoor museums first, ropeway in the middle | Hakone Open-Air Museum → Pola Museum of Art → Hakone Yuryo hot spring |
| Rain plus wind, ropeway suspended | Plan B: turn back at Gora | Open-Air Museum → Pola Museum → soba and hot spring in Hakone-Yumoto |
| Lightning or heavy rain, outlook unclear | Plan C: stay in Hakone-Yumoto | Town museum → soba → hot spring → early train back |
This is written for travellers coming from Tokyo Station for a day trip or one night, including families with children of different ages. Age rules for the hot springs are covered below because they change where a family can go.
Before you leave Hakone-Yumoto Station
- Check the status. The Hakone Navi transport page (the official site of the Odakyu Hakone group) has a service status section with a details link. The same page warns that some Hakone services may run reduced timetables.
- Drop your bags. Hakone-Yumoto Station has coin lockers, a waiting room and the Hakone Carry Service inside the ticket gates (8:30 to 19:00). On a wet day, an umbrella plus luggage makes every transfer harder, so get light first.
- Fix your return time. The ropeway runs 9:00 to 17:00 from February to November and 9:00 to 16:15 in December and January. All three plans below aim to be back in Hakone-Yumoto by around 16:00 to 17:00.
- Stay connected. Status pages, shuttle timetables and train apps only help if you have data on your phone. A Japan eSIM set up before you land avoids hunting for Wi-Fi in the rain.

Plan A: rain, but everything is running
Even when the ropeway runs, you will not get views of Owakudani or Lake Ashi in rain. Plan A treats the ropeway as a ride, not a viewpoint, and keeps your longest stays indoors. Times are planning targets. Check train times before you go.
| Target time | What you do | Indoor? | Stay |
|---|---|---|---|
| About 9:30 | Arrive at Hakone-Yumoto. Drop bags at the Carry Service, recheck service status | Station | 20 min |
| About 10:00 | Hakone Tozan Railway to Chokoku-no-Mori. Hakone Open-Air Museum (9:00 to 17:00, open every day) | Picasso Pavilion and main hall are indoors. Keep the outdoor sculpture walk short | 90 min |
| About 11:45 | Train one stop to Gora. Free shuttle bus from Gora Station to the Pola Museum of Art | Bus | 15 min |
| About 12:15 | Pola Museum of Art (9:00 to 17:00, last entry 16:30). Lunch at the museum restaurant or cafe | Indoors | 120 min |
| About 14:30 | Shuttle back to Gora. If still running, cable car and ropeway up to Owakudani and back, with no expectation of a view | Gondola | 60 to 90 min |
| About 16:00 | Train down to Hakone-Yumoto. Free shuttle (about 3 minutes, every 15 to 20 minutes) to Hakone Yuryo day-use hot spring | Indoors | 90 min |
| About 18:00 | Collect bags (Carry Service closes at 19:00) and head back to Tokyo | Station | — |
The key move is putting the ropeway in the middle of the day, not at the end. If wind picks up in the afternoon and service stops, you have already done two museums and nothing collapses. The classic sunny-day order, which ends at Owakudani and the lake, leaves the whole afternoon empty when service is suspended.
Plan B: the ropeway is suspended
Without the ropeway there is little reason to go beyond Gora. Use Gora as the turnaround and spend the afternoon back down in Hakone-Yumoto.
| Target time | What you do | Stay |
|---|---|---|
| About 9:30 | Arrive, drop bags | 20 min |
| About 10:00 | Hakone Open-Air Museum, indoor halls first | 90 min |
| About 11:45 | Free shuttle from Gora to the Pola Museum. Lunch inside | 120 min |
| About 14:30 | Back to Gora, train down to Hakone-Yumoto | 60 min including transfer buffer |
| About 15:30 | Hatsuhana, a soba shop about 5 minutes on foot from the station, known for soba made with Japanese mountain yam. If there is a queue, do the hot spring first | 45 min |
| About 16:30 | Hakone Yuryo (baths open 10:00 to 20:00 weekdays, 10:00 to 21:00 weekends and holidays) | 90 min |
| About 18:15 | Collect bags and return | — |
If only the pirate ship is running, Plan B still skips it. Reaching Togendai or Motohakone without the ropeway means crossing the mountains by Hakone Tozan Bus, and on a wet day the round trip eats the indoor time you came for. Check current bus routes on the Hakone Navi status page if you decide otherwise.
Plan C: lightning or heavy rain, stay in Hakone-Yumoto
When there is thunder, or when the status page gives no clear outlook, keep the whole half day within walking distance of the station. If things get worse, you walk back and board a train.
- Hakone Town Folk Museum (Hakone-machi Kyodo Shiryokan). A town-run museum on how Hakone grew from the seven hot spring villages of the Edo period to the seventeen of today, with permanent and special exhibition rooms, a hands-on corner and a reading room. It rarely appears in guides, but learning why the town exists before you soak in it is a rainy-day sequence you cannot do on the classic loop. Confirm hours and admission on the town’s visitor information page before you go.
- Hatsuhana. A soba shop in the Yuba district, with the main shop at the foot of Yumoto Bridge and an annex by the river, both about 5 minutes on foot from the station. Its signature soba is made with buckwheat flour, mountain yam and egg and no water. Opening hours were not published on the official site, so check the sign at the door.
- Hakone Yuryo. A day-use hot spring 3 minutes by free shuttle from the station. Adults (junior high age and up) pay 1,700 to 1,800 yen on weekdays and 2,000 to 2,200 yen on weekends and holidays. Elementary-age children pay 1,000 yen. Children below elementary age cannot use the main bath building and must use a private open-air bath room instead. It is open year-round with occasional maintenance closures.

Mori no Yu bath zone 11:00 to 20:00 | Not listed on the price page | Swimsuit zone 2,500 to 3,000 yen depending on the date band. Full pass 3,500 to 4,000 yen | Children aged 3 to elementary age 1,400 to 2,000 yen, age 2 and under free. Fills half a day entirely indoors |
| Hakone Yuryo | 10:00 to 20:00 weekdays, 10:00 to 21:00 weekends | Open year-round, occasional maintenance | 1,700 to 2,200 yen | 3 minutes from Hakone-Yumoto by free shuttle. Good as the last stop |
When a service stops: what is confirmed and what to do
| Service | Official condition | Fallback |
|---|---|---|
| Hakone Ropeway | May be suspended for strong wind, lightning, approaching typhoons or other severe weather, and for scheduled maintenance. Hours 9:00 to 17:00 Feb to Nov, 9:00 to 16:15 Dec to Jan | Turn back at Gora (Plan B). Hakone Tozan Bus can reach Togendai or Motohakone, but on a wet day the round trip is usually not worth it |
| Hakone Sightseeing Cruise (pirate ship) | Links Togendai, Hakone-machi and Motohakone ports in about 25 to 40 minutes. Cancellation conditions are not stated on the official page. Check status on Hakone Navi | If the ship is cancelled while the ropeway runs, Togendai becomes a dead end. Do not plan to reach Lake Ashi |
| Hakone Tozan Railway | Status on the Hakone Navi transport page | Stay in Hakone-Yumoto (Plan C) rather than waiting for a restart |
Family notes by age
- Babies and toddlers. Hakone-Yumoto Station has a baby care room, diaper-changing facilities and an accessible toilet. The Open-Air Museum lends strollers for free and has a nursing room. The Pola Museum asks visitors not to use back-worn baby carriers in the galleries, so bring a front carrier or use a stroller. Children under elementary age cannot enter the main baths at Hakone Yuryo. Book a private bath room there, or switch to Yunessun where age 2 and under is free.
- Elementary-age children. Both museums are free or cheap for this age: preschoolers are free at the Open-Air Museum and children up to junior high age are free at Pola. Hakone Yuryo charges 1,000 yen for elementary-age children and they can use the main baths. Remember that Japanese public baths are gender-separated and that swimwear is not worn in the bath zones, while Yunessun’s swimsuit zone is mixed.
- Teenagers. At Hakone Yuryo, junior high age and above pay the adult rate. Two museums plus a hot spring is a full day for a teenager; if energy runs out, drop the ropeway ride in Plan A and go straight to the bath.
Switching from a day trip to an overnight stay
If the weather worsens in the afternoon and the outlook for the train or Romancecar back is uncertain, staying one night in Hakone-Yumoto is a reasonable choice. Rooms sometimes open up on wet days, but availability and prices change, so confirm on the booking screen. Note that many inns have a set dinner time and check-in cutoff, so decide by mid-afternoon rather than at the station in the evening.

FAQ
Does rain automatically stop the ropeway?
No. The official wording is that service may be suspended when severe weather such as strong wind, lightning or an approaching typhoon is expected. Check the status in the morning, then choose Plan A or B.
Is Owakudani worth it in rain?
Not for the view. Plan A includes the ride only as an experience. If you want the volcanic landscape, save it for a clearer day.
Do I need more than an umbrella?
The Gora to Pola and Hakone-Yumoto to Yuryo shuttles remove most of the walking. A rain jacket helps if you want to see the outdoor sculptures at the Open-Air Museum.
Can we pay by card?
Museum and hot spring admission policies vary, and this article did not confirm payment methods on the official pages. Carry some cash for the soba shop and the shuttle-connected hot spring.
