This research-based two-day Nikko itinerary is for families visiting Japan with kids of different ages—from a baby or toddler to elementary-age children and teenagers. It keeps Day 1 to the area around Tobu-Nikko Station and gives Day 2 entirely to EDO WONDERLAND Nikko Edomura, with stroller rental, nursing rooms, nap time, toilets, meals, rain options, and hotel room capacity built into the plan.
Short answer: one short shrine visit, then one full theme-park day
The example group is two adults and six children: two preschoolers, three elementary-age children, and one teenager. The classic Nikko route adds Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls, but with eight people and a wide age gap that does not fit into two days. Instead, Day 1 covers Toshogu Shrine in 90 minutes or less, and Day 2 is spent at EDO WONDERLAND near Kinugawa Onsen, where the official FAQ lists stroller rental, a nursing room, hot water for formula, and accessible toilets.
This is a researched planning itinerary, not a first-person trip report. Opening days, prices, facilities, and hotel occupancy rules change. The information here was checked against official sources on September 23, 2026; verify each source again before booking.
Age-by-age fit
| Age | Day 1: Toshogu and station area | Day 2: EDO WONDERLAND |
|---|---|---|
| Baby or toddler | Keep it short and use a carrier. The shrine’s official page says nothing about strollers or steps. Tobu-Nikko Station has an accessible toilet with a baby seat. | Preschoolers enter free. A-type reclining strollers rent for 200 yen a day (up to 48 months and 18 kg). Nursing room in the center of the park. |
| Elementary-age child | Good for 90 minutes of carving-spotting. | Best fit: ninja training, the “child samurai” experience (ages 5–12), and costume rental sized by height. |
| Teenager | Add the treasure-house combined ticket if they want more. | Pays the adult price from junior high school age. Ninja training has no age limit. |
Practical check: stroller, nursing, toilets, meals, rain
| Need | Day 1 (Tobu-Nikko Station, Toshogu) | Day 2 (EDO WONDERLAND) |
|---|---|---|
| Stroller | No official stroller guidance at Toshogu. Plan on a carrier and fold the stroller; coin lockers are inside the station gates. | Rental at the office next to the ticket booth, 200 yen per day. Paved paths and detour routes for wheelchairs. |
| Nursing and diapers | Accessible toilet with baby chair and baby seat at the station. No nursing room is listed. | Nursing room in the center; several changing tables; diapers sold at the Echigoya shop; hot water for formula at Echigoya or the office by the gate. |
| Toilets | Use the station before the bus. | Three accessible toilets in the park. |
| Nap | Train to Kinugawa Onsen in the early afternoon, then the hotel room. | Reclining rental stroller; theaters and rest areas after 13:00. |
| Meals | Fried yuba buns by the station; yuba lunch nearby (some shops close on Wednesdays). | Outside food is not allowed in principle; only allergy-safe food is permitted. Ask in advance. |
| Rain | Switch to the Tamozawa Imperial Villa (closed Tuesdays) or the city history museum (closed Mondays). | Costume rental requires rain gear (umbrella rental 500 yen). Swap for the indoor Trick Art Pia Nikko. |
Two-day itinerary with rest buffers
| Time (approx.) | Move | Family buffer and split option |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 morning | Tokyo Station to Asakusa by subway, then Tobu limited express to Tobu-Nikko. | Reserve eight seats in advance. Limited express tickets are separate from the base fare. Add 15 minutes per transfer. |
| 10:30 | Arrive Tobu-Nikko. Change diapers at the station. Fried yuba buns at Nikko Sakaeya, 30 seconds from the station. | Sakaeya opens 9:30–17:00, irregular closures. Lockers inside the station. |
| 11:00–12:30 | World Heritage loop bus to Toshogu. Visit in 90 minutes or less. | Split: older kids and one adult add the treasure house; younger kids and one adult wait near the station or at the Tamozawa villa. |
| 12:30–13:30 | Yuba lunch near the station. | Call ahead about seating eight. Check the weekday: some shops close on Wednesdays. |
| 13:30–14:30 | Train Tobu-Nikko → Shimo-Imaichi (change) → Kinugawa-Onsen. | The 500-yen “Nikko-Kinugawa area rail pass” is sold only at station windows and is valid on the day of purchase. |
| 15:00–17:00 | Check in, nap, bath. | Free footbath “Kinuta no Yu” in front of the station, 9:00–18:00. Bring a towel. |
| Day 2 8:40 | Bus for EDO WONDERLAND from bus stop 3 at Kinugawa-Onsen Station, about 15 minutes. | Park opens 9:00 in summer season (March 20–November 30). |
| 9:00–11:30 | Enter, rent a stroller, locate the nursing room. Ninja training, costume rental. | Costumes are sized by height, not age. Rain gear required at the costume house. |
| 11:30–13:00 | Early lunch inside the park, rest. | Only allergy-safe food may be brought in. Nap in the reclining stroller. |
| 13:00–14:30 | Child samurai experience (ages 5–12), theaters. Set a meeting time for the teenager. | Shortcut: if the toddler is done, one adult leaves early for the hotel or station. |
| 14:30–15:30 | Back to Kinugawa-Onsen Station. Baumkuchen at Hachiya, one minute from the station (9:00–17:30). | Re-entry to the park is allowed the same day if you forget something. |
| Around 16:00 | Limited express back toward Tokyo. | Book the return seats in advance too. |
What each stop involves
Toshogu Shrine (90 minutes maximum)
Open 9:00–17:00 from April 1 to October 31 and 9:00–16:00 from November 1 to March 31; admission closes 30 minutes before closing. Adults and high-school students pay 1,600 yen, elementary and junior-high students 550 yen; the combined ticket with the treasure house is 2,400 yen and 870 yen. The official page does not state a preschool price, so ask at the window. For two adults, one teenager, and three elementary-age children the shrine-only total is 5,400 yen.
EDO WONDERLAND Nikko Edomura (5–6 hours)
Summer hours (March 20–November 30) are 9:00–17:00; winter hours (December 1–March 19) are 9:30–16:00. Closed days vary, so check the official calendar for your date rather than assuming a weekday. The one-day passport is 5,800 yen for adults (junior high school and up), 3,000 yen for elementary-age children, and free for preschoolers. The afternoon ticket, valid from 14:00 (13:00 in winter), is 5,000 yen and 2,600 yen. Lockers by the gate cost 200, 300, or 400 yen.
Nikko Daiyagawa Park (for families with a rental car)
A free prefectural park with a large combination playground, mini trampolines, slides, a 23-station athletic course, and a restaurant with a free rest area. It is about 4 km from Imaichi Interchange with a 307-space main car park (8:30–18:30, until 17:30 October–March), but a 20-minute walk from the nearest station, so it suits families driving rather than taking the train. Athletic-course fees and opening hours are not listed on the official site.
Getting around: train versus rental car
| Point | Train (Tobu limited express) | Rental car |
|---|---|---|
| Eight people | Reserve eight seats; fold the stroller on board. | You need an 8-seat vehicle. EDO WONDERLAND is about 15 minutes from Imaichi IC. |
| Day 1 split for younger kids | Station area or Tamozawa villa (bus about 10 minutes). | Daiyagawa Park. |
| Nikko to Kinugawa | Change at Shimo-Imaichi. Rail pass sold at the window only, cash, same day. | Free to move, but the tourism association warns of autumn-foliage congestion 9:00–15:00 (to 17:00 on weekends). |
| Best for | Families who can nap on the train and send luggage ahead. | Families with two or more toddlers who want naps in the car. |
EDO WONDERLAND also runs a free shuttle from the Toshogu approach (39 seats, first come, no reservations, no service on Wednesdays). A group of eight may not all get seats on a first-come shuttle, so this plan uses the regular bus from Kinugawa-Onsen Station instead.
Many of the checks above—the park calendar, train timetables, and the digital rail passes sold through the NIKKO MaaS smartphone site—require mobile data. If your phone is not set up for Japan yet, an eSIM avoids hunting for Wi-Fi at the station.

Ticket math: one-day passport or afternoon ticket
| Ticket | 3 adults (incl. teenager) | 3 elementary-age | 2 preschoolers | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One-day passport | 5,800 × 3 = 17,400 yen | 3,000 × 3 = 9,000 yen | Free | 26,400 yen |
| Afternoon ticket (from 14:00; 13:00 in winter) | 5,000 × 3 = 15,000 yen | 2,600 × 3 = 7,800 yen | Free | 22,800 yen |
The difference is 3,600 yen. In winter the park closes at 16:00, so an afternoon ticket gives only about three hours. Japanese-language advance e-tickets are sold through a third-party platform; overseas purchases may be handled differently, so check the official price page.
Hotels: assume two rooms for eight people
| Check | Asaya Hotel | Hotel Mikazuki Kinugawa |
|---|---|---|
| Largest official capacity | Hachibankan VIP room, 114 m², 7 guests (two semi-double beds plus a 15-tatami room). Other Hachibankan rooms are 57 m² for 5 guests. | Room pages do not list capacity. CLUB9 “Kawashibuki” is 139.8 m² with four semi-double beds. |
| Room split for eight | Two 5-guest rooms: one adult with three children in each. | Check capacity per room on the booking screen first. |
| Child rates and co-sleeping | Not stated on the official room page. Japanese hotels often let small children share existing bedding at a reduced rate; confirm how many are allowed per room. | Not stated; confirm on the booking screen. |
| Kid-friendly facilities | Buffet dining hall. | Indoor garden spa, kids’ land, game corner, table tennis, rooftop pool in summer. |
| Best for | Families who want quiet room time. | Families who want indoor play after check-in or on rainy days. |
Japanese-style rooms require shoes off at the entrance, and futon bedding is laid out in the evening. The number of futons, not floor space, decides how many can sleep, so confirm bedding count when booking two rooms and ask for adjacent rooms, knowing the hotel may not be able to honor that request.
Shortcuts and split plans
- Shorten Day 1: skip Toshogu, eat near the station, take the early-afternoon train, and check in before 15:00.
- Split Day 1: older kids and one adult take the treasure-house ticket; younger kids and one adult rest indoors at the Tamozawa villa (closed Tuesdays, open daily in October–November).
- Split Day 2: teens and elementary-age kids do ninja training and theaters; the toddler group bases itself near the central nursing room. Meet at the lockers by the gate.
- Shorten Day 2: leave at 13:00 for the footbath and Hachiya, then an earlier train.
- Rain: swap EDO WONDERLAND for the indoor Trick Art Pia Nikko (9:30–17:00, last entry 16:30, adults 1,900 yen, children 1,100 yen, 20 minutes by bus from Kinugawa-Onsen Station, occasional closures).

FAQ
Can I use a stroller at Toshogu Shrine?
The official visitor page gives no stroller or step information, so this plan assumes a baby carrier and a folded stroller.
Can we bring baby food into EDO WONDERLAND?
Outside food is not allowed in principle. Only food for allergies or dietary restrictions is permitted; contact the park in advance.
Is there a room for eight?
Neither hotel’s official room page lists an eight-guest room. Plan on two rooms and confirm capacity and bedding per room on the booking screen.
