A 2-day, 1-night Atami plan for families visiting Japan with kids of different ages, starting from Tokyo Station. Day 1 stays on foot near the station and adds an indoor trick-art museum on the hill. Day 2 uses a car to reach a free hillside park with obstacle courses and a seaside park with large play structures. Naps, rain, and toilet stops are decided first.
Who this plan is for
The example family is 2 adults and 6 children: a baby (1), a toddler (4), two elementary-age children (7 and 10), and two teenagers (12 and 14). This is a research-based itinerary built from official websites checked on 2026-09-27. It is not a trip report, and we do not describe places as if we had been there.
- Good fit: families arriving by Shinkansen who can walk on Day 1 and rent a car at Atami Station for Day 2. Atami has a small playground near the station, a free hillside park, and a seaside playground, so different ages can be split up.
- Poor fit: plans that depend on the Atami sightseeing loop bus (Yu-Yu Bus). The bus operator and the city both state that all services have been suspended since 11 October 2025 until further notice (checked 2026-09-27). Atami is also hilly, so pushing a stroller from the station up to the hilltop attractions is not realistic.
Age-by-age ratings
| Place | Baby/toddler | Elementary-age child | Teenager |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nagisa Small Park (playground near the beach) | Excellent. Combination play structure, spring rides, swings, diaper-changing sheets | Good for a 7-year-old, small for a 10-year-old | Just a seaside walk |
| Atami Trick Art Museum (indoor) | Fine. Children 2 and under enter free (tourism association listing) | Excellent | Excellent for photos |
| Atami Castle (observation deck, free games, foot bath) | Only the view and the foot bath | Excellent (table tennis, ring toss) | Excellent |
| Himenosawa Park (free, 2 obstacle courses) | Fine in the open lawns. The courses are long | Excellent | Excellent (each course about 3.5 km) |
| Nagahama Seaside Park (large play structures) | Excellent. A separate area for small children | Excellent (pirate ship and undersea-city structures) | Fine as a rest stop |
| MOA Museum of Art (rain option, free for junior high and under) | Fine as a rain shelter | Fine | Good |
Practical checklist
| Item | What we confirmed |
|---|---|
| Stroller | Station to Nagisa Small Park is walkable. Reach the castle and trick-art museum by car, or by the bus to “Korakuen” plus the Atami Ropeway. Himenosawa Park and Nagahama Seaside Park have no official stroller information; keep the little ones on the lawns. |
| Nursing and diapers | Nagisa Small Park has 2 accessible toilets with diaper-changing sheets. Nagahama Seaside Park also lists 2 accessible toilets with changing sheets. No nursing room was confirmed on this route, so plan to use your hotel room or the car. |
| Toilets | Nagisa Small Park (2), Nagahama Seaside Park (2), Himenosawa Park (7 in the park plus 2 at the sports ground, outdoor). Use a toilet before boarding the 30-minute bus to Himenosawa Park. |
| Naps | Day 1 check-in around 15:30 for a nap in the room. Day 2 uses the drive between the two parks as nap time. |
| Meals | Atami Purin (pudding shop, main store) is open 10:00 to 18:00 with no regular closing day. We could not confirm any restaurant seating 8 people on an official site, so plan to split across 2 tables or bring food to the parks. |
| Rain | Day 1: spend the afternoon at the indoor trick-art museum and the castle. Day 2: drop both parks and go to MOA Museum of Art (closed Thursdays). |
Day 1: Tokyo Station to Atami, then on foot
| Time | Plan | Buffer and notes |
|---|---|---|
| 08:30 | Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Atami | We did not confirm travel time or fares on official pages, so use the JR Central or JR East official search. Book 8 reserved seats in the same car. A Japan Rail Pass covers Kodama and Hikari trains but not Nozomi. |
| 10:00 | Arrive at Atami Station. Leave big luggage with your hotel or in station lockers | Lockers were not confirmed officially. Ask your hotel about luggage storage before arrival day. |
| 10:20 | Atami Purin main store (Tawarahon-cho 3-14) for a snack | 10:00 to 18:00, no regular closing day, 450 to 550 yen per pudding. First toilet stop. |
| 11:00 | Nagisa Small Park playground | Combination play structure, spring rides, swings. 2 accessible toilets with changing sheets. No parking lot. |
| 12:15 | Lunch near the station, split across 2 tables | Ask about high chairs on the spot. If it is crowded, buy food and eat on the park benches. |
| 13:30 | Go up to Atami Castle and the Trick Art Museum. By car about 10 minutes. By bus, take the bus for Atami Port and Korakuen about 10 minutes to “Korakuen”, then the Atami Ropeway about 3 minutes, then walk about 3 minutes | Tickets are sold at the castle (tourism association listing). Castle parking: 100 cars, 500 yen. |
| 14:00 | Split up. Older group (1 adult, ages 10, 12, 14): castle observation deck, free games, foot bath. Younger group (1 adult, ages 1, 4, 7): Trick Art Museum | Both are open 9:00 to 17:00, last entry 16:30, open every day. If the baby falls asleep, the younger group goes to the hotel first. |
| 15:30 | Hotel check-in, nap and rest | If everyone is tired, skip the castle and move this earlier. |
| 18:00 | Dinner | Confirm seating for 8 and children’s meals when you book. |
Day 2: free obstacle courses, then a seaside playground
| Time | Plan | Buffer and notes |
|---|---|---|
| 09:00 | Check out. Drive to Himenosawa Park (Izusan, Himenosawa 1164) | Without a car: bus for Moto-Hakone from Atami Station about 30 minutes to “Himenosawa Koen” (tourism association listing). Toilet before the bus. |
| 09:30 | Himenosawa Park. Older group takes obstacle course A or B (each about 3.5 km). Younger group plays on the picnic lawns | Park open all day, free. Free parking at 3 lots. 7 toilets in the park. Visitor center 8:30 to 17:30. |
| 11:30 | Drive to Nagahama Seaside Park (Kami-Taga). Baby naps in the car | The city page lists no public transport, so this leg is car-only. Families without a car return to Atami Station from Himenosawa Park and head home. |
| 12:00 | Nagahama Seaside Park: undersea-city structure, pirate ship, whale, spring rides, and a small-children area | 2 accessible toilets with changing sheets. Parking is charged only during the swimming season. Bring lunch, or check the weekend farm stand at Umi-eru Nagahama. |
| 13:30 | Head home. Return the rental car at Atami Station | Cut-off time is 13:30. Extend to 14:30 at most. |
Everyone together, or split by age
- Everyone together: Day 1 only Nagisa Small Park and the Trick Art Museum, skipping the castle. Day 2 only the lawns at Himenosawa Park.
- Split by age: Day 1 at 14:00, castle for the older group and Trick Art Museum for the younger group. Day 2, obstacle course group and lawn group at Himenosawa Park. Agree on a meeting time and place first.
- Shortcut when tired: Day 1, skip the 13:30 trip up the hill and go straight to the hotel. Day 2, skip Nagahama Seaside Park.
Train and bus versus car
| Leg | Shinkansen plus local bus | Car (rental) |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 near the station | Excellent, on foot | Fine, but no parking at Nagisa Small Park |
| Castle and Trick Art Museum | Good: bus about 10 min plus ropeway about 3 min | Excellent: about 10 min, parking 500 yen |
| Himenosawa Park | Good: bus about 30 min, allow extra time for 8 people boarding | Excellent: free parking |
| Nagahama Seaside Park | Not listed officially | Excellent |
| Sightseeing loop bus | Suspended | Not needed |
Our conclusion: public transport on Day 1, car on Day 2. Renting at Atami Station on the morning of Day 2 keeps luggage and the stroller off the buses. Japan drives on the left, and most rental companies require an International Driving Permit with your home licence. Bus timetables and rental pickup details are easiest to check with mobile data, so a Japan eSIM set up before departure saves time at the station.

Hotel room capacity for 8 people
We found no room officially listed for 8 people. Plan on 2 rooms and confirm the following on the booking screen or by phone.
| Hotel | Confirmed on the official site | Confirm before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Atami Korakuen Hotel (Tower Building and AQUA SQUARE) | Accommodation page lists a Tower Building standard Japanese-style room for up to 6 people and AQUA SQUARE Western rooms for 1 to 2. Close to the “Korakuen” bus stop for the castle ropeway | Two Japanese rooms or one Japanese plus one Western room, co-sleeping age and count, number of futons, child rates, check-in time, parking, shuttle, dinner style |
| Ooedo Onsen Monogatari Premium Atami | Official site exists, but room capacity and child rates could not be read from the official pages | Capacity per room, child rate categories, co-sleeping, walking time from the station, parking |
Japan-specific notes for families: Japanese-style rooms have tatami floors and futon bedding laid out in the evening; you take your shoes off at the door. Many hotels price children by age band, and “co-sleeping” (no bedding, often no meal) may be free or discounted for young children, but the number of co-sleepers per room is capped. Bath areas in hot-spring hotels are separated by gender, so decide in advance which adult takes which children.
