Summary: Atami’s hotels do not have rooms for eight people, and the town’s sightseeing bus is suspended. This guide compares three hotels whose official pages list room capacity, explains the Japanese co-sleeping rule that lets a large family use fewer rooms, and shows how to time your arrival at Atami Station around reservation-only hotel shuttles.
Who this is for
This guide is written for families visiting Japan with kids of different ages. The example family is two adults and six children: a 1-year-old, a 5-year-old, two elementary-age children, and two teenagers, eight people in total, arriving by Shinkansen from Tokyo without a car. It is a research-based comparison of official hotel pages, last checked on 30 September 2026. It is not a review of a stay.
The short answer
None of the three hotels we could verify offers a room for eight. The largest rooms hold five or six guests, so plan on two rooms. The bigger problem is getting from the station to the hotel. Atami’s hop-on sightseeing bus, the Yu-Yu Bus, has been suspended since 11 October 2025 until further notice, according to Tokai Bus. That leaves hotel shuttles, route buses, and taxis. Eight people do not fit in one Japanese taxi, and all three hotels say shuttle seats are limited or boarding is not assured. Ask about shuttle seats for eight before you confirm the booking.
- Baby-first families: Kamenoi Hotel Atami has a Premier Baby Room with a baby bed and bottle warmer, a kids room, and a kids corner in the buffet restaurant.
- Families who want fewer rooms: Risonare Atami states that children up to age 6 may co-sleep free of a bed count, up to the same number as the room capacity.
- Families who hate fixed shuttle times: Atami Korakuen Hotel runs its shuttle roughly every 10 minutes from 9:40 to 19:10 with no reservation mentioned.
How the hotels suit each age
| Hotel | Baby / toddler | Elementary-age child | Teenager |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kamenoi Hotel Atami | Best fit: baby room, kids room, kids corner | Good: about 90-dish buffet | Weaker: indoor facilities aimed at younger kids |
| Risonare Atami | Good: co-sleeping to age 6, kids room | Good: buffet or kaiseki course | Good: all rooms 60 sq m or more, easy to give teens their own room |
| Atami Korakuen Hotel | Good: tatami room for six, futons on the floor | Good: frequent shuttle back to the station area | Good: teens can walk the station shopping streets on their own |

None of the three hotels publishes bedding counts, child price categories, allergy handling, or connecting rooms. Confirm these on the booking screen or by email. Several other Atami hotels that appear in family videos could not be verified from official pages on the check date, so they are not compared here.
Japanese hotel rules foreign families should know
Co-sleeping (soine). Many Japanese hotels let small children share a parent’s bed or futon without counting toward capacity, usually at a reduced or zero rate with no meals. Each hotel sets its own age limit. Risonare Atami publishes its rule: up to age 6, and as many co-sleepers as the room capacity. The other two hotels do not publish one, so ask.
Child price categories. Japanese booking screens typically split children into elementary-age with adult meals, elementary-age with child meals, preschool with bedding, and preschool without bedding. Teenagers are almost always charged as adults. The total for eight people can change a lot depending on how you classify each child, and none of the three hotels publishes its categories, so check before paying.
Tatami rooms. The six-person room at Atami Korakuen Hotel is a Japanese-style room with futons laid on tatami mats. You take shoes off at the entrance. For a family with a crawling baby this is convenient: no bed to fall from, and the whole floor is a play area. Bring your own stroller; none of the three hotels lists stroller rental.
Splitting eight people into two rooms
Put one adult and three children in each room, and keep the 1-year-old and the 5-year-old in different rooms so each adult handles one small child at night.
- Atami Korakuen Hotel: two Japanese-style rooms for six. One adult plus three kids is within capacity. Ask whether the 1-year-old counts toward the six.
- Risonare Atami: two rooms for six. With the 1-year-old and 5-year-old as co-sleepers, only six people use bed capacity, so two rooms leave spare space. One room for eight is not possible because the maximum is six.
- Kamenoi Hotel Atami: Premier Kids Room (5) plus Deluxe Panorama View Family Room (5). The Baby Room holds only four, so if you choose it for the baby’s room it is one adult plus three children at the limit.
Timing your Shinkansen around the shuttle
The building attached to the ticket gate is Lusca Atami, the station mall. The 3rd floor has a baby room with a baby bed, a formula water dispenser, a changing board, and a women-only nursing space. The accessible toilets on the 1st and 3rd floors have baby beds. Coin lockers on the 3rd floor run 9:00 to 21:00 for 400 to 800 yen. Restaurants open 11:00 to 21:00. Use it to feed, change, eat, and store bags before the shuttle.
| Time | What to do | Buffer |
|---|---|---|
| About 12:30 | Arrive at Atami Station. Diaper change and nursing on Lusca 3F, large bags into lockers | 15 min |
| 12:45 to 13:45 | Lunch on the Lusca restaurant floor. Expect eight people to be split across two tables | 60 min |
| 13:45 to 14:15 | Toilets on 1F, walk to the shuttle stop. Risonare needs check-in 20 minutes before departure | 30 min |
| 14:00 to 14:35 | Kamenoi 14:00 pickup, or Risonare 14:00 or 14:30. Korakuen runs about every 10 min | Next shuttle or route bus if full |
| 15:00 | Check in. Baby and toddler nap in the room; older kids use the kids room or the public bath | 90 min |
Kamenoi’s first pickup is 13:00, so if you would rather eat near the hotel, choose a train that arrives before then. Risonare’s first pickup is 14:00; arriving much earlier means waiting at the station. If the baby’s nap is falling apart, skip the station stop and take the first shuttle.
Practical checklist by need
| Need | What we could confirm |
|---|---|
| Stroller | No rental listed at any of the three hotels. Bring your own and expect to fold it on the shuttle |
| Nursing and diapers | Lusca Atami 3F baby room with formula water. Kamenoi’s Baby Room has a bottle warmer. Not stated at Risonare or Korakuen |
| Toilets | Accessible toilets on Lusca 1F and 3F, hotel lobbies. Go before boarding the shuttle |
| Naps | Check-in is 3:00 PM at Risonare and Kamenoi, so aim to arrive around 12:30 and nap right after check-in |
| Meals and allergies | Buffets at Kamenoi and Risonare absorb picky eaters. Seating for eight, child pricing, and allergy handling must be requested at booking |
| Rainy day | Eat and nurse at Lusca Atami (shops 9:00 to 19:00), take an early shuttle, and use the hotel kids room |
| Luggage | Lusca 3F lockers, 400 to 800 yen. Confirm the shuttle can take eight people plus bags |
Car versus public transport
If you rent a car, parking is free at Kamenoi (128 spaces) and Risonare (number not stated), while Korakuen lists 52 flat and 68 guest spaces with the first 60 minutes free and 500 yen per 30 minutes after that; confirm the guest rate when booking. If you come by train, build the plan around the shuttle’s limited seats. Korakuen and Kamenoi have route bus alternatives. Risonare lists none, so ask what happens when the shuttle is full.
Staying connected
Shuttle reservations, hotel emails, and route bus timetables are easier with mobile data from the moment you land. If you have not arranged a SIM, an eSIM you set up before departure avoids hunting for Wi-Fi at the station with eight people in tow.

Why these hotels suit this family, and when they do not
They suit you because two rooms of five or six guests fit one adult and three children each within official capacity, Kamenoi has nursing equipment in the room, Risonare publishes a clear co-sleeping rule, and Korakuen’s shuttle runs all day.
They may not suit you because no hotel guarantees eight shuttle seats on the same departure, child pricing and bedding counts are not published so the total is unknown until you reach the booking screen, and teenagers may find the indoor facilities aimed at younger children.

FAQ
Is there any Atami hotel room for eight people?
Not among the three hotels with published capacity. Plan on two rooms.
What if the shuttle is full?
Korakuen has route bus no. 7 and Kamenoi has the Uenoyama route bus. Risonare does not list an alternative, so ask at booking.
Where can we nurse or change a diaper at the station?
Lusca Atami, attached to the station: baby room on 3F, baby beds in the accessible toilets on 1F and 3F.
