A two-day Kyoto plan for a family with a baby, elementary-age children and teenagers, starting from Osaka. No temples. Day one stays one train stop from Kyoto Station at Umekoji (railway museum, park, aquarium, hotel within walking distance). Day two uses the subway to a free city zoo. Nursing rooms, strollers, toilets, nap windows, closing days and the cost for eight people are decided in advance.

Who this plan is for

The model family is two adults and six children: a 1-year-old, a 4-year-old, two elementary-age children, and two teenagers (eight people). The author’s own family has six children, but this is a research-based itinerary built from official sources, not a trip report. Information was checked on 2 October 2026.

  • Good fit: families arriving by train from Osaka who want to minimise walking and stroller lifting. Every facility on day one has an official nursing room, and the hotel is two minutes from the station.
  • Poor fit: families who want to see several famous temples, or who are travelling by car. The hotel used as an example states officially that it has no parking, and we could not confirm parking at the zoo or the park.
  • Closing days: the Kyoto Railway Museum closes on Wednesdays (open on national holidays and school holidays). Kyoto City Zoo and the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art close on Mondays (next weekday if Monday is a holiday). Kyoto Aquarium is open every day. If day two falls on a Monday, swap day two for the aquarium.

Practical checks for families

Item What the plan does
Stroller JR Umekoji-Kyotonishi Station has one ticket gate, elevators to both platforms, and a multipurpose toilet with a baby bed inside the gate (JR West official). The railway museum lends strollers free at the entrance and lets you park your own. The aquarium has ramps and elevators but no loaners. The zoo lends strollers free at the main and east entrances (limited numbers). Subway Higashiyama Station has elevators from exit 2 (south side of Sanjo-dori) to the concourse and platform (city transport bureau).
Nursing and diapers Railway museum: nursing rooms with hot-water pots and changing tables throughout. Aquarium: three nursing rooms with hot water, six changing tables. Zoo: three nursing rooms (main entrance, Otogi-no-kuni area, east entrance) with bottle-warming equipment and baby beds or seats. Stations: baby bed inside the gate at Umekoji-Kyotonishi; universal changing sheet and baby chair in the multipurpose toilets at Higashiyama.
Toilets Osaka Station before boarding, Umekoji-Kyotonishi inside the gate, each facility, Higashiyama Station (one multipurpose toilet each for men and women, back left inside the gate). Always go before boarding the Sagano Line or the subway.
Nap window Day one: 13:00 to 14:30 on the park lawn, or go to the hotel two minutes away if early check-in is allowed (check-in time is not published; confirm on the booking screen). Day two: benches and nursing rooms inside the zoo, then the train.
Meals No restaurant seating eight could be confirmed officially. Day one: the streetcar cafe in the park (about 100 seats, takeout available) or sandwiches from Shizuya, a Kyoto bakery founded in 1948 with a shop at Kyoto Station, eaten on the lawn. Day two: buy at Kyoto Station and bring it in; confirm the zoo’s food policy before you go.
Rain Day one is indoors anyway (museum and aquarium); replace park time with the aquarium. Day two: museum of art instead of the zoo. Both close on Mondays, so on a Monday stay in Umekoji and use the aquarium.

Whole-family plan and the split option

  • Whole family: as in the tables. The aquarium costs 11,700 yen for eight, so decide by budget.
  • Split option (day one afternoon): one adult with the four older children goes to the aquarium (2,600 + 1,400 x 4 = 8,200 yen); the other adult takes the baby and toddler from the park straight to the hotel two minutes away. Meet at the hotel.
  • Short version: skip the zoo. Spend the morning of day two at the aquarium or back at the museum and leave Kyoto Station at 13:00. Umekoji is one stop away, so the decision can be made at 12:00.
  • If day two is a Monday: the zoo and the art museum are closed. Stay in Umekoji and give the museum and the aquarium one day each.

Transport notes for overseas visitors

  • Which station: from Osaka use JR Osaka Station (not Shin-Osaka, which is the shinkansen station). The JR Kyoto Line runs to Kyoto Station; at Kyoto change to the Sagano Line for one stop to Umekoji-Kyotonishi. The adult fare Osaka to Kyoto is 580 yen. Journey times were not confirmed here; use the JR West journey planner.
  • Tickets: an IC card (Suica, ICOCA or similar) works on JR, the subway and most buses. The Kyoto subway one-day pass is 800 yen adult and 400 yen child; the subway and bus one-day pass is 1,100 yen and 550 yen. Day two only needs a subway round trip, so add up the regular fares for four adult fares (adults and teenagers) and two child fares and compare. The child age range for the pass is not stated officially; ask at the ticket office. In Japan, children aged 6 to 11 usually pay a child fare and younger children often travel free with an adult, but confirm for each operator.
  • Luggage: there are coin lockers at Umekoji-Kyotonishi Station (JR West). Leave bags at the hotel after check-out rather than carrying them on the subway with a stroller.
  • Payment: the aquarium sells web tickets 30 days ahead with date selection, and timed entry on peak dates. The zoo and museum fees above are cash-level amounts; check each official page for card and online options.
  • Bad weather: the plan already favours indoor facilities. If the Sagano Line is disrupted, Umekoji is about a 20-minute walk from Kyoto Station; with a stroller and eight people, allow 30 minutes.
  • Connectivity: every schedule in this plan should be re-checked on the day, so a working data connection matters. Get a Japan eSIM for your trip

Car versus public transport

This plan assumes trains. The example hotel states officially that it has no parking, parking at the zoo and the park could not be confirmed, and day one fits within walking distance, so a car adds nothing. If you arrive in an eight-seat rental car, park it near Kyoto Station overnight and use the trains in the city.

Hotel checks for a large family

Hotel Emion Kyoto, two minutes from Umekoji-Kyotonishi Station, publishes room types on its official page: a Japanese-Western room (63 square metres, 1 to 5 guests), Emion Four (43 square metres, 1 to 4 guests) and Standard Four (37 square metres, 1 to 4 guests). Eight people means two rooms, with one adult in each. Co-sleeping rules and ages, bed counts, connecting rooms and check-in time are not published; confirm on the booking screen. In Japan, children sharing an existing bed without extra bedding are often free or discounted, but each hotel sets its own age limit, and the Japanese-Western room may have futon on a tatami floor where shoes are removed.

  • Why it fits this family: museum, park, aquarium and station are all on foot, so the baby and toddler can be taken to the room early. Free public bath for guests and a buffet breakfast.
  • When it does not fit: families arriving by car (no parking) or wanting all eight in one room (maximum five).

Re-check before you book

  • Railway museum closing days (Wednesdays; open on holidays and school holidays), fees, advance tickets, Kids Park age rules
  • Aquarium hours for your date (extended on some days), fees, timed-entry dates
  • Streetcar cafe hours and closing days; Shizuya Kyoto Station shop hours and allergen information
  • Toilet and changing-table locations in Umekoji Park; vintage streetcar operating days (10:00 to 16:00, 310 yen day ticket, 150 yen one way)
  • Zoo closing days, stroller availability, restaurant seating and food policy
  • Hotel co-sleeping rules, bed counts, check-in and check-out times, luggage storage, bath rules for children
  • Subway regular fares Kyoto to Higashiyama and the child age range for the day pass
  • JR journey time and child fares Osaka to Kyoto

FAQ

Can we add one temple?
Not in this plan. If you must, use the afternoon of day two near Higashiyama Station and accept losing the nap window. With two children under five in a group of eight, the plan holds better without it.

Museum or aquarium if we can only afford one?
The railway museum: the nursing rooms, Kids Park and stroller loan are confirmed officially and it costs 5,200 yen for eight. The aquarium is open daily, so it also works as the Monday backup.

Can this be a day trip from Osaka?
Yes, using day one alone. Leave Umekoji-Kyotonishi by 16:30 and you are back in Osaka in the early evening.
