A two-day Ise plan for a family with a baby, elementary-age children and teenagers, starting from Nagoya Station by train. Day one covers both shrines of Ise Jingu (Geku and Naiku) with luggage sent ahead to the hotel from Iseshi Station. The hotel is a five-minute walk from Naiku and has a Japanese-style room that officially sleeps eight. Day two is Toba Aquarium, which is indoors, open every day and free for children under three. Information was checked on 7 October 2026.
Who this plan is for
The model family is two adults and six children: a 1-year-old, a 4-year-old, two elementary-age children and two teenagers (eight people). The author’s own family has six children, but this is a research-based itinerary built from official sources, not a trip report.
- Good fit: families who want to visit both shrines once, on day one, and give day two to the children. Families who carry the baby in a sling.
- Poor fit: families who want to add Futami or Mt Asama. Families who depend on a stroller for the whole visit. Ise Jingu states officially that it does not lend or store strollers, the paths are gravel, and the main sanctuaries sit above stone steps.
- Closing days: Sengukan museum closes on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month (the next day if Tuesday is a holiday). Toba Aquarium is open every day. Okage Yokocho shops close at 17:00 from November to February.
Suitability by age
| Place | Baby/toddler | Elementary-age child | Teenager |
|---|---|---|---|
| Geku (Outer Shrine), about 10 minutes from the gate to the main sanctuary | Fair. Gravel path; changing tables in every toilet (official). No stroller loan or storage | Excellent. Short walk, good first shrine | Excellent. Traditional order is Geku first |
| Sengukan museum | Fair. Preschoolers free. Changing table in the multipurpose toilet; no nursing room | Excellent. 100 yen | Excellent. 100 yen. Indoor option in rain |
| Naiku (Inner Shrine), about 20 minutes from the gate | Fair. Nursing room in the Sanshuden rest hall (official). One adult waits with the stroller below the steps | Excellent. Rest by the Isuzu River | Excellent. Early-morning guided visit for hotel guests |
| Oharai-machi, Okage Yokocho, Akafuku main shop | Good. Carry the baby in crowds. Akafuku opens at 5:00 | Excellent. Street food | Excellent. Free time |
| Toba Aquarium | Excellent. Under 3 free, age 3 and over 800 yen. Baby room and stroller loan (official) | Excellent. 1,600 yen. Indoors | Excellent. 1,600 yen. 12,800 yen for eight, so this is where the family may split |
Practical checks for families
| Item | What the plan does |
|---|---|
| Stroller | Ise Jingu’s official FAQ says strollers are neither lent nor stored. Gravel paths can be pushed, but the main sanctuaries are reached by stone steps, so one adult waits below with the stroller and the baby goes up in a sling. Toba Aquarium lends strollers and has a baby room (official). |
| Nursing and diapers | Iseshi Station Baggage Office has a nursing room upstairs (Ise City). Naiku has a nursing room in the Sanshuden rest hall and changing tables in every toilet (shrine FAQ). Geku has changing tables in toilets. Sengukan has a changing table but no nursing room. Toba Aquarium has a baby room. |
| Toilets | Nagoya Station before boarding, the baggage office upstairs, Geku, Sengukan, Naiku, the hotel, Toba Aquarium. Go before every bus ride. Toilet locations in Okage Yokocho were not confirmed. |
| Nap window | Day one 13:00 to 14:30 in the Sanshuden rest hall or the hotel room if early check-in is allowed (check-in time is not published). Day two: the CAN bus ride of about 50 minutes and the aquarium baby room. |
| Meals | No restaurant seating eight was confirmed. Day one lunch: Ise udon on the Geku approach street (listed as a local speciality by the Ise Tourist Association), entering in two groups of four before noon. Dinner and breakfast are included at the hotel, which has an official food-allergy page. Day two lunch: the aquarium restaurant (seat count not confirmed). |
| Rain | Day one: stay longer in Sengukan, shorten Naiku and go to the hotel early, or move Naiku to the early-morning visit. Day two is indoors anyway. |
| Shoes-off and co-sleeping | The hotel rooms are tatami rooms: shoes come off at the door and everyone sleeps on futon. Children aged 3 and under stay free but get no futon, towels or meals, so the baby shares a parent’s futon (official rates page). |

| 7:30 to 9:00 | Breakfast, check-out | Check-out time to confirm. Luggage travels with you, so confirm whether the aquarium has lockers |

Tickets, fares and connectivity
- Sanco’s Ise-Toba Michikusa Pass costs 1,300 yen (adult) and 650 yen (child) for one day, 1,900 yen and 950 yen for two days, and covers the CAN bus and the shrine buses (official). Day one uses one 520-yen bus ride, so the two-day pass only pays off if the CAN bus from Naiku-mae to the aquarium costs more than 1,380 yen. Confirm that fare at the counter before buying.
- Kintetsu’s Ise Jingu Sanpai Kippu (Tokai version) costs 6,800 yen for adults and 3,400 yen for children, includes round-trip limited-express tickets and three days of unlimited rides on the Sanco shrine buses and the CAN bus. It is advance-sale only and cannot be bought on the day of travel. Compare it with regular fares for four adults and two children on the Kintetsu fare search.
- Fares and seat rules for children under six were not confirmed; a child occupying a reserved seat may need a child ticket.
- Bus and train information in this area is mostly in Japanese, and timetables change. A Japan eSIM lets you check official timetables and fare searches on the move. Get a Japan eSIM for your trip

Car or public transport
Both are realistic. Jingu Kaikan lists parking for up to 200 cars, and Toba Aquarium has a parking page. A car helps with luggage and naps; the risk is queuing for parking near Naiku on busy days. The shrine FAQ points drivers to the Rakuraku Ise Mode site for parking hours and fees. Public transport works because the baggage office delivers luggage to the hotel and the CAN bus runs without a change to the aquarium.
Hotel check for a large family
Jingu Kaikan (Ise, Uji-nakanokiri-cho 152) lists on its official rooms page a 21-tatami Japanese room for up to 8 guests, 12-tatami rooms for up to 5 and 10-tatami rooms for up to 4, all with bath and toilet, plus a twin Western room for 2 and West Wing rooms without private bath. Eight people fit in one 21-tatami room. Rates are per person with dinner and breakfast; adults are junior-high age and over, children are 4 to 12, and children 3 and under stay free without futon or meals. Check-in and check-out times, cots and non-smoking status are not published; confirm by phone or on the booking screen. Hotel booking sites with English pages are not part of this site’s approved programmes, so no booking link is given here.
