A 3-day winter plan for families visiting Japan with kids of different ages: two nights in Sapporo, a day trip to Otaru by train, and attractions where children under 16 enter free. Built from official sources checked on October 8, 2026. This is a research-based plan, not a trip report.
Who this plan is for
The plan assumes 2 adults and 6 children: a baby (1), a toddler (4), three elementary-age children and one teenager. You arrive at New Chitose Airport, use trains and subways, and do not rent a car. Japan’s winter sidewalks are packed snow, so a baby carrier works better than a stroller in Otaru.
- Stay in Sapporo both nights. You move luggage only on day 1 and day 3. Otaru is a day trip of about 32 minutes by train.
- Kids are free at the core stops. Maruyama Zoo is free for junior high school age and under. The Otaru Museum Canal Hall is free for the same ages. The Bank of Japan Otaru Museum is free for everyone. For 8 people you pay only two adult tickets.
- Winter-only fun: the Tenguyama Snow Park sled area in Otaru opens December 19, 2026 to March 28, 2027 with free entry and sled rental for 500 yen per hour.
- When this plan does not work: Otaru Aquarium closes November 24 to December 11, 2026 and February 24 to March 13, 2027. Maruyama Zoo closes Monday to Friday of the week containing the second Wednesday of November, and December 29 to 31. Check these dates first.

Practical checks for families
| Item | What we confirmed |
|---|---|
| Stroller | Maruyama Zoo rents strollers at the main gate (10) and west gate (14) for 250 yen. Otaru Aquarium and Shiroi Koibito Park also list strollers. Snowy sidewalks are hard to push on, so leave your own stroller at the hotel for the Otaru day. |
| Nursing and diapers | Maruyama Zoo has 7 nursing rooms and hot water for formula at 6 points. The Bank of Japan Otaru Museum has a baby seat and changing seat in its accessible toilet. Otaru Aquarium has a nursing room. Shiroi Koibito Park lists nursing rooms and changing tables. We could not confirm nursing rooms at Sapporo Station, Otaru Station or the Canal Hall. |
| Naps and rest | Day 1 ends at the zoo before the 15:30 last entry. Day 2 has a free hour from 13:00 at the Canal Hall or Otaru Station waiting room. Day 3 is a morning only. |
| Toilets | Use the airport before boarding, the Zoo Center, Otaru Station, the Canal Hall, the Bank of Japan museum and the Tenguyama summit. Not all trains have toilets, so go before boarding. |
| Meals | Otaru City says close to 100 restaurants serve Otaru ankake yakisoba (stir-fried noodles in thick sauce). We could not confirm a restaurant that seats 8, so split into two tables of 4. Ask each shop about high chairs and allergens. |
| Snowstorm plan | In Otaru move indoors: Canal Hall (open daily), Bank of Japan museum (closed Wednesdays), then Otaru Aquarium (winter hours 10:00 to 16:00). In Sapporo use the zoo’s Animal Science Hall or Shiroi Koibito Park (10:00 to 18:00). |
Day 1: New Chitose Airport to Sapporo and Maruyama Zoo
| Time | Plan | Buffer and notes |
|---|---|---|
| 10:30 | Rapid Airport train from New Chitose Airport Station to Sapporo Station (adult 1,230 yen, 33 to 43 minutes) | Car 4 is reserved “u-seat” for 1,000 yen. Allow 15 minutes to board with 8 people |
| 11:30 | Arrive Sapporo, leave luggage at the hotel | Confirm pre-check-in luggage storage when booking |
| 12:00 | Lunch near Sapporo Station | Two tables of 4 |
| 13:15 | Tozai subway line to Maruyama-Koen Station, then JR Bus 円15, 円16 or Kuramaru from bus terminal stop 4, about 5 minutes | Walking is about 15 minutes; take the bus in snow |
| 13:45 | Maruyama Zoo (winter 9:30 to 16:00, last entry 15:30). Adults 800 yen x 2 = 1,600 yen, children free | Nursing rooms, hot water, indoor Animal Science Hall |
| 15:45 | Bus and subway back to the hotel | Leave before the 16:00 close |
| 16:30 | Check in, rest, early dinner |
Day 2: Otaru day trip, museums, noodles and sledding
| Time | Plan | Buffer and notes |
|---|---|---|
| 9:00 | JR train Sapporo to Otaru (adult one way 800 yen since the April 1, 2025 fare change) | Some Rapid Airport trains run through to Otaru. About 32 minutes |
| 9:45 | Otaru Museum Canal Hall, 10 minutes on foot (9:30 to 17:00, adults 300 yen, children free, open daily except Dec 29 to Jan 3) | Allow 15 minutes on snowy sidewalks |
| 10:45 | Bank of Japan Otaru Museum (winter 10:00 to 17:00, free, closed Wednesdays) | Guided explanation about 30 minutes |
| 11:45 | Lunch: Otaru ankake yakisoba | If one shop has a line, move to another |
| 13:00 | Nap and rest hour | Canal Hall or station waiting room |
| 14:00 | Bus from Otaru Station to the Tenguyama Ropeway. Winter round trip adult 2,000 yen, child 1,000 yen, one preschooler free per adult | Bus fare and last bus not confirmed online; ask at the station bus terminal |
| 14:30 | Tenguyama Snow Park (10:00 to 19:00, free entry, sled 500 yen/hour, snow tube 1,000 yen/hour) | Stop after 60 minutes. No slider or zip line in winter |
| 16:00 | Down the mountain. After sunset, the “Blue Canal” lights (November 1, 2026 to January 31, 2027, sunset to 22:30) | Night canal cruise adult 2,000 yen; boats have roofs from December 1 |
| 17:30 | JR train from Otaru Station back to Sapporo | Board at Otaru Station, not Minami-Otaru, because some trains skip it |
Ropeway cost for 8: three people at the adult rate (the teenager counts as an adult from junior high school age) at 2,000 yen plus three children at 1,000 yen equals 9,000 yen. The two preschoolers ride free with the two adults. This is the largest single cost of the trip, so the split option below cuts it to 5,000 yen.
Day 3: Shiroi Koibito Park or Sapporo Station, then the airport
| Time | Plan | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 9:30 | Check out, store luggage at the hotel | |
| 10:00 | Tozai line to Miyanosawa Station, walk to Shiroi Koibito Park (10:00 to 18:00, paid area last entry 16:30) | Admission prices and closing days were not available online; nursing rooms and changing tables listed |
| 12:30 | Back to Sapporo Station, lunch, collect luggage | If tired, stay inside the station complex |
| 14:00 | Rapid Airport to New Chitose Airport (as fast as 33 minutes) | Arrive 2 hours before departure |
Split options and shortcuts
- Split on day 2 afternoon: one adult takes the elementary-age children and the teenager to Tenguyama (5,000 yen). The other adult rests with the baby and toddler at the Canal Hall and takes the 15:30 train back to Sapporo.
- Shortcuts: skipping the Bank of Japan museum saves 45 minutes; skipping Tenguyama saves 2.5 hours. Keep the Canal Hall, which is open daily.
- Early return: leave the zoo at 14:30 on day 1, or take the 15:30 train from Otaru on day 2.
Tickets, fares, luggage and connectivity
- The JR Sapporo to Otaru adult fare is 800 yen since April 1, 2025. Guides showing 750 yen are out of date. Child fares were not confirmed on official pages, so this article does not list them.
- The Chuo Bus “Kosoku Otaru-go” highway bus costs 730 yen one way or 1,360 yen round trip from Sapporo Station and takes about 1 hour. It saves 240 yen per adult round trip but adds about 28 minutes each way. The posted timetable is the summer schedule.
- Reserved u-seats on the Rapid Airport cost 1,000 yen per person. With a baby, boarding early for unreserved seats at the first station is more practical than paying for 8 reserved seats.
- Snowstorms can delay trains. Plan the 17:30 return and be ready to wait at Otaru Station.

Car or public transport
| Item | Public transport (this plan) | Rental car |
|---|---|---|
| Snow driving | Not needed | Icy roads; a visiting driver needs winter-driving experience and two child seats |
| Luggage | Moved only on day 1 and day 3 | Stays in the car |
| Cost for 8 | JR Sapporo-Otaru round trip 3,200 yen for two adults plus children | 8-seat vehicle rates vary; zoo parking 700 yen per visit |
| Best for | Families new to snow driving | Families used to winter roads |
Hotel check for a large family
We could not confirm a Sapporo hotel room that sleeps 8 on an official page. One confirmed option is the Japanese-style “Japanese Superior” room at New Otani Inn Sapporo: 46 square meters (6 plus 8 tatami mats), capacity 1 to 6, futon 100 cm wide, non-smoking floor, separate bath and toilet. For 8 people this means two rooms: one adult with five children in the tatami room, one adult with one child in a second room. Co-sleeping rules, child rates, cribs and the nearest station are not on the room page, so confirm by phone (011-222-9156) or in the booking screen.
Notes for visitors: a tatami room means shoes off at the door and futon bedding on the floor, which suits a baby and a toddler. Japanese hotels often count children sharing bedding as “co-sleeping” without a bed; ask how many are allowed per room and whether the two rooms can be on the same floor.
