Summary: Okinawa’s beach resorts sit 60 to 90 minutes by car from Naha Airport, and no room we could verify sleeps eight. This guide compares three resorts on the main island using only what their official pages state: room capacity, indoor and outdoor pool seasons, meals, parking, and how long the drive from the airport takes. It then shows how to split a family of eight into two rooms and how to pick a region from your arrival time.
Who this is for
This guide is written for families visiting Japan with kids of different ages. The example family is two adults and six children: a 1-year-old, a 5-year-old, two elementary-age children, and two teenagers, eight people in total. They fly into Naha Airport and rent a car there. It is a research-based comparison of official hotel pages, last checked on 10 October 2026. It is not a review of a stay, and the writer has not stayed at these hotels.
The short answer
Pick the region first, then the hotel. Eight people do not fit in one Japanese taxi, so you will rent a van or take the airport limousine bus. Renaissance Resort Okinawa in Onna Village is about 60 minutes from the airport by car. Hotel Mahaina Wellness Resort Okinawa in Motobu, next to the Churaumi Aquarium, is about 90 minutes. If your flight lands after 4 p.m., the far north leaves no playtime on day one. Second, check for an indoor pool. Outdoor pools close in winter even in Okinawa, and toddlers spend more time in the hotel pool than in the sea.
- Families who want room capacity stated officially: Renaissance (Japanese-style rooms for 5, connecting rooms for 4 to 7) and Hotel Mahaina (2-bedroom rooms for 6, family rooms for 4 to 5).
- Families building the trip around the aquarium: Hotel Mahaina, which its official site describes as next to the Churaumi Aquarium, with a year-round indoor pool.
- Families who want to stay closer to the airport: Renaissance (about 60 minutes) or Hotel Nikko Alivila in Yomitan, which has a heated indoor pool but does not list room capacity on its official room page.
How the hotels suit each age
| Hotel | Baby / toddler | Elementary-age child | Teenager |
|---|---|---|---|
| Renaissance Resort Okinawa | Best fit: tatami rooms for 5, kids pajamas and step stools in connecting rooms | Good: nine restaurants and bars, every room faces the ocean | Good: connecting rooms let teens have their own side |
| Hotel Mahaina | Best fit: family rooms with a tatami area for futons, indoor pool all year | Best fit: 30 m outdoor pool with a shallow kids corner, aquarium next door | Good: 81 sq m two-bedroom rooms give teens a separate bedroom |
| Hotel Nikko Alivila | Good: indoor pool is free for preschoolers, 1.2 m deep | Good: garden pool April to December, casual buffet | Weaker: room capacity not published, so room splits are hard to plan |

Japanese hotel rules that change the math
Japanese hotels count capacity per room and often let small children share an adult’s bed without being counted, a practice called soine or co-sleeping. The age limit and whether co-sleepers are free differ by hotel and were not published by any of these three. Child rates also come in bands, typically preschool, elementary, and junior high and up. Tatami rooms are shoes-off rooms where futons are laid on the floor at night, which is useful with a 1-year-old because there is no bed to fall from. Hotel Mahaina’s family rooms and Renaissance’s Japanese-style rooms are the tatami options here.
Splitting eight people into two rooms
The default is one adult with three children in each room. Keep the 1-year-old and the 5-year-old in different rooms so each adult has only one small child at night.
- Renaissance: Two Japanese-style rooms for 5 each. Whether the 1-year-old counts toward capacity must be checked when booking. Flipper’s Connecting joins two 36 sq m rooms for up to 7, so eight people do not fit. A three-room plan of connecting rooms plus one twin gives the two teenagers their own room.
- Hotel Mahaina: One 2-bedroom room (81 sq m, four beds plus tatami, 6 guests) with one adult and four or five children, plus one Family room (twin beds plus tatami, 4 to 5 guests). Two 2-bedroom rooms gives more space.
- Hotel Nikko Alivila: The official room page lists room names only, so we cannot verify a split. This guide does not propose one.
Driving: work backwards from your landing time
You need a rental van with eight or more seats, and you should specify child seats when booking. Allow about an hour at Naha Airport for the rental shuttle and paperwork before you are on the road.
| Time (example) | Step | Buffer |
|---|---|---|
| 12:00 | Land at Naha. Nursing, diaper change and toilets before the rental car shuttle | 30 min |
| 12:30 to 13:30 | Pick up the van, fit child seats. Lunch near the rental office or snacks in the car | 60 min |
| 13:30 to 14:30 | Onna Village (Renaissance): about 60 minutes. The 1-year-old naps in the car | 15 min for traffic |
| 13:30 to 15:00 | Motobu (Hotel Mahaina): about 90 minutes. Stop once at an expressway rest area for toilets | 15 min stop |
| 15:00 onward | Check in. Younger kids nap in the room, older kids go to the indoor pool | 90 min |
If you land after 4 p.m., skip day-one activities in the north and visit the aquarium the next day. A two-base plan, one night in Naha or central Okinawa and then the north, is the fallback. Without a car, Renaissance and Alivila are served by the airport limousine bus at 1,700 yen per adult and 850 yen per child, but seats for eight plus luggage must be confirmed with the bus company.

Stroller, nursing, toilets, meals, and rain
| Item | What we could verify |
|---|---|
| Stroller | No stroller rental listed by the three hotels. Churaumi Aquarium lends strollers free at four points, limited numbers, first come, no reservations |
| Nursing and diapers | Churaumi Aquarium has nursing rooms at the 3F entrance and in front of the 2F theater with sofas and hot water for formula; bring your own powder. Changing tables in restrooms on every floor. Size L diapers sold at the Blue Manta shop. No hotel lists nursing facilities |
| Toilets | Use the airport before leaving. On the drive north, stop once at an expressway rest area |
| Naps | Use the 60 to 90 minute drive as nap time, then the room right after check-in while older kids swim |
| Meals | Mahaina and Alivila have buffets. Confirm seating for eight, child rates and allergy handling when booking |
| Rain | Indoor pools (Mahaina all year, Alivila paid), the aquarium, or the free wooden craft hall at Kenmin no Mori forest park in Onna (closed Mondays) |
Local food and a quieter spot
Motobu is known for a road lined with Okinawa soba noodle shops. The Motobu tourism association lists Motobu Soba at 4639-1 Sakimotobu, open 11:00 to 15:30 with last orders at 15:00, closed Wednesdays. Seating for eight, parking and reservations are not listed, so call ahead. If it sells out, fall back to the hotel buffet. For a rainy or waiting hour near Renaissance, the Onna Village site lists Kenmin no Mori at 1770 Afuso with a hall of forest videos, dioramas and a woodworking room, open 9:00 to 18:30 from April to August and 9:00 to 17:30 from September to March, closed Mondays. Admission, parking and nursing facilities are not listed.
Why this suits a large family, and when it does not
Why it suits: Renaissance and Hotel Mahaina publish capacities of 5 to 6 per room, so one adult plus three children per room fits within the stated limits. Mahaina adds a year-round indoor pool next to the aquarium, so toddler naps and older kids’ play happen on the same site.
When it does not: Bed counts, co-sleeping rules, child rates and check-in times are unpublished at all three, so the total cost is unknown until the booking screen. Alivila’s capacity is unpublished. Children who get carsick on drives over an hour are better served by a central-Okinawa hotel or the two-base plan.
