Tokyo 3-Day Itinerary for a Large Family with Kids of Different Ages: Narita to Ueno on One Train

A three-day Tokyo plan for a family with a baby, elementary-age children and teenagers, starting at Narita Airport. The idea is to move as little as possible: one direct train from the airport to Ueno, a hotel within walking distance of Ueno Station, a zoo, a children’s library and a science museum all in the same park, and a single subway ride to Asakusa on the last day. Nursing rooms, strollers, closing days and the cost for eight people are decided in advance.

Who this plan is for

The model family is two adults and six children: a 1-year-old, a 4-year-old, two elementary-age children and two teenagers (eight people). The author’s own family has six children, but this is a research-based itinerary built from official sources, not a trip report. Information was checked on 22 October 2026.

  • Good fit: families landing at Narita who do not want to change trains with luggage and a stroller. The Keisei Skyliner runs from Narita Airport to Keisei-Ueno with no transfer, and Ueno Zoo, the International Library of Children’s Literature, the National Museum of Nature and Science and the hotel are all within walking distance of Ueno Station.
  • Poor fit: families whose main goal is Tokyo Disney Resort, Odaiba or other areas far from Ueno. Also not suited to driving: the children’s library states officially that it has no parking, and we could not confirm parking at the hotel.
  • Closing days (important): Ueno Zoo, the children’s library and the science museum are all closed on Mondays (the next day if Monday is a national holiday). The library also closes on national holidays and the third Wednesday of each month. Avoid having your full day in Ueno fall on a Monday. A swap plan is given below.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: Narita to Ueno on one train

Time Plan Rest margin and notes
After arrival Board the Skyliner at Narita Airport Terminal 1 or Terminal 2-3 station. No transfer to Keisei-Ueno Reserve eight seats together in advance. Use airport toilets and changing tables before boarding
Arrival at Keisei-Ueno Walk to MIMARU Tokyo Ueno East, three minutes from the Iriya exit of JR Ueno Station (official). The walking route from Keisei-Ueno is not stated officially; check a map Check-in from 15:00 (official). Confirm whether luggage can be left earlier

Afternoon arrival Only a walk in Ueno Park, then anmitsu (a Japanese sweet) at Mihashi, a long-standing Ueno shop (10:30 to 21:00, last order 20:30) Seating for eight not confirmed. Takeaway is sold, so eating at the hotel is the safer plan
Evening arrival Straight to the hotel. Buy food near Ueno Station and cook in the room kitchen Do not search for a restaurant on arrival day. This is the single biggest way to reduce movement

Day 2: Ueno Zoo, then split in the afternoon

Time Whole-family plan Split option
9:30 Enter the zoo at the main gate as it opens (five minutes from the Park exit). Rent a stroller at the main gate (500 yen, cash) —
9:30 to 11:30 East garden. Nursing at Saruyama Kitchen or the booth near the information centre —
11:30 Early lunch at Saruyama Kitchen (2F row seating, kids’ chairs). If full, take food to the west garden rest house terrace One adult secures seats while the other waits outside with the children
13:00 to 14:30 Nap window at the west garden rest house (nursing room inside) One adult takes the 1- and 4-year-old back to the hotel. The other adult takes the four older children to the science museum (free for them, 630 yen for the adult; closes 17:00, last entry 16:30)
15:00 to 16:30 West garden. Ticket sales end at 16:00, so plan on not re-entering Museum group leaves by 16:30 and meets at the hotel
17:00 Back to the hotel. Cook, or buy food near the station and eat in —

Day 3: Asakusa, then back to Narita from Ueno

Time Plan Notes
Morning Check out (time not stated officially; confirm). Leave luggage at the hotel or in station lockers (confirm availability) If your flight is in the morning, skip Asakusa and go straight to the Skyliner
Morning Tokyo Metro Ginza Line from Ueno to Asakusa. Senso-ji’s main hall opens at 6:00 (6:30 from October to March), so visit before the crowds Confirm fares, travel time and elevator locations on the official site
After the temple Walk about five minutes from Asakusa Station to Sumida Park and its whale-slide playground Toilet and changing table locations in the park are not stated officially. Use toilets on the temple side first
Lunch Buy food in Asakusa and eat in the park. No restaurant seating eight has been confirmed If it rains, skip the park and return to Ueno for the museum or library
Afternoon Ginza Line back to Ueno, collect luggage, Skyliner from Keisei-Ueno to Narita Airport All seats reserved. Work backwards from arriving at the airport two hours before departure, and add 15 minutes per transfer for the children

Monday and rainy-day swaps

  • Day 2 falls on a Monday: the zoo, museum and library are all closed. Swap days 2 and 3: Asakusa on Monday, the zoo on Tuesday. The hotel stays the same, so nothing else changes.
  • Day 2 is rainy: skip the zoo. Science museum in the morning (opens 9:00), children’s library in the afternoon. Both have officially confirmed nursing rooms and changing tables.
  • Monday and rain: every indoor facility we confirmed in Ueno is closed on Mondays. Stay in the hotel’s kitchen-equipped room or limit the day to Senso-ji. The best fix is to avoid a Monday when you plan the dates.
  • Saruyama Kitchen is full: take food to the west garden rest house. If that fails, walk back to the hotel and cook.
  • Nap falls apart: decide at 13:00 on day 2. One adult takes the youngest back; the rest continue. This only works because the hotel is walkable.
  • Shortened plan: drop Asakusa on day 3, take a short walk in Ueno Park and leave early for Narita.

Car or public transport

This plan uses public transport only. There is a no-transfer train from the airport, the three Ueno facilities and the hotel are all walkable, and the library states it has no parking. Parking an eight-seat rental car in central Tokyo would cost more effort than the walking it saves. Consider a rental car only if you change the plan to include destinations outside Ueno.

Hotel check: MIMARU Tokyo Ueno East

The official room page lists a Connecting Japanese Apartment of 78 square metres for 8 adults and 4 children, with six single beds and two futon sets. Smaller Apartment and Japanese Apartment rooms of about 40 square metres take 4 adults and 2 children. Every room has a kitchen. The address is 4-26-3 Higashi-Ueno, Taito City, three minutes from the Iriya exit of JR Ueno Station and five minutes from exit 1 of Tokyo Metro Ueno Station.

  • Why it suits this family: eight people fit in one connecting unit on the official capacity listing, and the kitchen means no restaurant hunting on arrival day or on tired evenings. Rooms with futons are typical of Japan: shoes come off at the door and the floor becomes sleeping space.
  • When it does not suit: co-sleeping age rules, child rates, bed rails, check-out time and parking are not stated officially; confirm on the booking screen. If the connecting unit is sold out, book two rooms with one adult in each.
  • Before booking: ask whether the 1- and 4-year-old count among the “4 children”, whether six beds plus two futons are counted as eight sleeping places, and whether luggage can be stored before check-in. Prices change, so recheck on the booking screen.

Tips for visitors from abroad

  • Stroller rental at the zoo is cash only. Carry some yen.
  • Mobile data helps with maps between Ueno and Asakusa and with checking closing days on the spot. Get a Japan eSIM for your trip
